Center Theatre Group has announced a\u00a0Black Out Night\u00a0<\/strong>for the\u00a0Friday,\u00a0April\u00a08, 2022, 8\u00a0p.m.\u00a0<\/strong>performance of\u00a0“Blues for an Alabama”\u00a0<\/strong>at the Mark Taper Forum. Actress\u00a0Wendy Raquel Robinson<\/strong> will begin the night with a pre-show address welcoming the audience into the theatre for this special\u00a0performance of\u00a0“Blues for an Alabama Sky”\u00a0intended for Black-identifying theatregoers. In order to\u00a0continue the conversation and celebration of Black artists, the performance will be followed by\u00a0a reception\u00a0in front of the Taper\u00a0on the\u00a0Jerry Moss Plaza\u00a0(formerly Music Center Plaza)\u00a0featuring live music.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Set in 1930’s Harlem, this revival of Pearl Cleage’s rich and beautiful work runs at the Mark Taper Forum April6 through May 8, 2022, with opening night set for April 13, 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tony Award-winning actress\u00a0Phylicia Rashad<\/strong>, who originated the role of Angel in the world premiere of “Blues for an Alabama Sky”\u00a0more than 25 years ago returns to\u00a0direct\u00a0this\u00a0timeless piece that was first presented in 1995\u00a0by Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre.\u00a0She\u00a0leads a cast\u00a0that features\u00a0Joe Holt<\/strong>,\u00a0Nija Okoro<\/strong>,\u00a0Dennis Pearson<\/strong>,\u00a0Greg Alverez Reid\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Kim Steele<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The creative team includes John Iacovelli <\/strong>(scenic design), Wendell C. Carmichael <\/strong>(costume, wig and hair design), Elizabeth Harper <\/strong>(lighting design)and Jeff Gardner <\/strong>(sound design), with original composition by Dontae Winslow<\/strong>. Casting is by Kim Coleman, CSA <\/strong>and Michelle Blair <\/strong>is the production stage manager.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Angel is a free-spirited Cotton Club singer who’s out of luck but never out of dreams. Guy is a costume designer waiting for Josephine Baker to invite him to join her in Paris. Delia, a young activist, is trying to give the women of Harlem a choice about their future. Sam, a prominent physician, is either delivering babies or out at the club letting the good times roll. And Leland, who recently arrived in Harlem from Alabama, is haunted by the wide-open skies and lost love he left behind. The lives and dreams of these men and women converge with passion and politics as the art and celebration of the Harlem Renaissance give way to the harsh realities of the Great Depression. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tickets for\u00a0all other performances of\u00a0“Blues for an Alabama Sky” are currently on sale at Center Theatre Group\/Mark Taper Forum and start at $30. Center Theatre Group’s\u00a0first Black Out Night was created\u00a0in February of 2022\u00a0for Jeremy O. Harris’ “Slave Play”\u00a0and was\u00a0based on the event he created\u00a0in 2019 during the Broadway engagement to provide a freeing environment for Black-identifying audience members to experience\u00a0the unflinching new work free from the white gaze.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
