This year\u2019s 74th Emmy Awards Ceremony had a total of five talented Black actors, writers, and artists with achievements in various categories. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quinta Brunson, lead actress and writer of ABC\u2019s \u201cAbbott Elementary\u201d, won the award for best Writing for a Comedy Series. This was Brunson\u2019s first Emmy win which made her only the second Black woman to receive the award in all of Emmy\u2019s history. \u201cAbbott Elementary\u201d is one of many shows that Brunson has starred in, including Issa Rae\u2019s \u201cA Black Lady Sketch Show\u201d and \u201cQuinta vs. Everything\u201d which aired on BuzzFeedVideo in 2017. A previous winner of the best Writing for a Comedy Series award is Lena Waithe, who won as a co-writer of \u201cMaster of None\u201d in 2017, and Larry Wilmore, whom Brunson cheerfully thanked in her acceptance speech. As Brunson expressed her gratitude for those who helped her before and throughout the production of her show, she said, \u201cI do want to thank Larry Wilmore for teaching me how to write television as well as he did.\u201d Wilmore accepted the award in 2002 as a writer for \u201cThe Bernie Mac Show\u201d and is also a three-time Emmy nominee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along with Brunson\u2019s \u201cAbbott Elementary\u201d, \u201cLizzo\u2019s Watch Out For The Big Girls\u201d earned the Pop icon her first Emmy for best Competition Program. The show, which first aired in March of this year on Amazon Prime Video,  follows Lizzo\u2019s journey toward finding plus-size dancers to accompany her on a world tour. Throughout her joyful and emotional speech, Lizzo expressed her childhood dream of seeing more diverse representation in the media and stated, \u201cWhen I was a little girl, all I wanted to see was me in the media. Someone fat like me, Black like me, beautiful like me. If I could go back and tell little Lizzo something, I\u2019d be like, \u2018You gon\u2019 see that person, but\u2026it gon\u2019 have to be you.\u201d Lizzo joins RuPaul Charles, producer and host of VH1\u2019s \u201cRuPaul\u2019s Drag Race\u201d, as a fellow Black winner in the Competition Program category. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
