{"id":164519,"date":"2023-08-17T14:31:33","date_gmt":"2023-08-17T18:31:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/?p=164519"},"modified":"2023-08-25T13:36:44","modified_gmt":"2023-08-25T17:36:44","slug":"review-they-cloned-tyrone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/review-they-cloned-tyrone\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: They Cloned Tyrone"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>They Cloned Tyrone<\/em> (Netflix) is a fun film with a stellar cast, namely <strong>John Boyega<\/strong> (<em>Star Wars: The Last Jedi<\/em>, <em>The Woman King<\/em>) along with <strong>Jamie Foxx<\/strong>, in his first film release since his illness, and <strong>Teyonah Parris<\/strong>&nbsp; (<em>Chi-Raq<\/em>, <em>Empire<\/em>). The film is as unique as it is funny and clever, and on top of all that, it\u2019s a sci-fi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An homage to blaxploitation films of the 70\u2019s, <em>They Coned Tyrone<\/em>, is a well-written and imaginative story with plenty of creative plot twists as it follows three street characters: a pimp (Jamie Foxx), a drug dealer (John Boyega) and a hooker\/wanna-be Nancy Drew, played by Teyonah Parris. After a series of weird incidences, these three bumbling underachievers unwittingly discover that they, and the inhabitants of their poor and struggling community, are the subject of a clandestine government cloning experiment. Even if no one will believe them, they are hell bent on exposing the truth and taking their neighborhood back.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 1 1'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/They-Cloned-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-164520\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">They Cloned Tyrone &#8211; BTS &#8211; (L to R) Jamie Foxx (Producer) as Slick Charles, Teyonah Parris as Yo-Yo and John Boyega as Fontaine on the set of They Cloned Tyrone. The story takes place in a fictional low income inner city community rife with crime called The Glen.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/john-boyega-to-star-in-netflixs-comedy-they-cloned-tyrone\/\">John Boyega To Star In Netflix\u2019s Comedy \u2018They Cloned Tyrone\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his feature film directorial debut, <strong>Juel Taylor<\/strong> (<em>Creed II<\/em>, <em>Space Jam: The New Legacy<\/em>) does a great job giving the project a dark, gritty feel and stylish look. Taylor also wrote the screenplay along with <strong>Tony Rettenmaier<\/strong> (<em>Space Jam: They New Legacy<\/em>). The film is well cast with great performances, especially from Foxx who we can see is having a blast playing this character, and wearing these outrageous and colorful costumes. Foxx, Boyega and Parris have amazing chemistry on screen adding to the films appeal.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 1 1'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/TCT_20210223_10443_R-1024x683.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-164523\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">They Cloned Tyrone &#8211; BTS &#8211; Writer, Director, Producer Juel Taylor on the set of They Cloned Tyrone. Cr. Parrish Lewis\/Netflix \u00a9 2023.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Identity, racism, cloning and science are a few of the many thought-provoking themes explored in the film. The ending of the story is open for interpretation adding to the films complexity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taylor explained in an interview that the film\u2019s title was actually a \u201cjoke title\u201d since none of the main characters were named Tyrone. The films title was actually supposed to be Reagan Era, but during filming the name <em>They Cloned Tyrone<\/em> caught on and they decided to keep it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rated 94% on<a href=\"https:\/\/rottentomatoes.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> RottenTomatoes.com<\/a>, the film also received praise from around\u00a0the film industry including Oscar-winning director\/screenwriter of <em>Moonlight<\/em>, <strong>Barry Jenkins<\/strong>.
