Courtesy of Sundance Institute.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The festival\u2019s Grand Jury Prize winner in the US Dramatic category went to the semi-auto biographical drama <em>In The Summers<\/em> from Latina writer\/director<strong> Alessandra Lacorazza Samudio<\/strong>. The film follows two Latina sisters coming-of-age over several summers in New Mexico and also explores complicated father\/daughter relationships.&nbsp; The Directing Award also went to Samudio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In another coming-of-age story, Taiwanese-American filmmaker <strong>Sean Wang<\/strong>\u2019s<em> Didi <\/em>took home the Audience Award in the US Dramatic category for his dramedy about a Taiwanese-American boy growing up in California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 1 1'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IntheSummers-Still--1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-164766\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A still from In The Summers by Alessandra Lacorazza, an official selection of the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. Courtesy of Sundance Institute.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award for Acting went to young Indian actress <strong>Preeti Panigrahi<\/strong> for the romance\/drama <em>Girls Will Be Girls. <\/em>The film also won the World Cinema Dramatic Audience Award and is from director <strong>Shuchi Talati<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other winners include \u201cSujo,\u201d from writer\/director <strong>Astrid Rondero<\/strong>, which won for narrative feature, about a 4-year-old orphan destined for a life working for a drug cartel. And <strong>Carla Gutierrez<\/strong>\u2019\u2019s <em>Frida<\/em>, which won the<strong> Jonathan Oppenheim <\/strong>Editing Award: U.S. Documentary. It is a new documentary about iconic Mexican artist <strong>Frida Kahlo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jack Begert<\/strong>, a director famous for hip hop music videos for the likes of<strong> Doja Cat,<\/strong> <strong>Jay Rock, Tinashe, Hit Boy, <\/strong>and <strong>Marian Hill <\/strong>got behind the camera for his feature film<em> <\/em>debut, <em>Little Death,<\/em> which won the NEXT Innovator Award. The film stars <strong>David Schwimmer<\/strong> and <strong>Dominic Fike<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-highlights-from-the-festival-s-black-filmmakers\"><strong>Highlights from the festival\u2019s Black Filmmakers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Notable films from Black filmmakers about the Black Experience which where the talk of this year\u2019s Sundance Film Festival include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Chiwetel Ejiofor<\/strong>\u2019s <em>Rob Peace<\/em> &#8211; A biography about&nbsp; Newark marijuana dealer\/Yale academic,<strong> Rob Peace<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dawn Porter<\/strong>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/festival.sundance.org\/program\/film\/656a0bf3fac9f40a76c04a2a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Luther: Never Too Much<\/em><\/a> &#8211; A film about singer <strong>Luther Vandross<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Peter Murimi<\/strong>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/festival.sundance.org\/program\/film\/6569ffc5fac9f421a1c03cfc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Battle for Laikipia<\/em><\/a> &#8211; A documentary about injustices in Kenya<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Yance Ford<\/strong>\u2019s <em>Power<\/em> &#8211; A documentary about American policing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Jazmin Ren\u00e9e Jones<\/strong>&#8216; <em>Seeking Mavis Bacon<\/em> &#8211; a documentary from director <strong>Jazmin Ren\u00e9e Jones<\/strong> about the disappearance of <strong>Mavis Bacon<\/strong>, the Black woman who taught all of us how to type in the 1980\u2019s with her nationally used typing program.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Newcomers to the festival also made a splash including <strong>Titus Kaphar<\/strong>\u2019s drama<a href=\"https:\/\/festival.sundance.org\/program\/film\/656a00bafac9f45740c03f37\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <em>Exhibiting Forgiveness<\/em><\/a> as well as J.M.
