\u201cThe Rite\u201d is a supernatural thriller that uncovers the Devil\u2019s reach to even one of the holiest places on Earth.<\/p>\n

Inspired by true events, the film follows seminary student Michael Kovak (Colin O\u2019Donoghue), who is sent to study exorcism at the Vatican in spite of his own doubts about the controversial practice and even his own faith. Wearing his deep skepticism like armor, Michael challenges his superiors to look to psychiatry, rather than demons, in treating the possessed.<\/p>\n

Only when he\u2019s sent to apprentice with the unorthodox Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins)\u2014a legendary priest who has performed thousands of exorcisms\u2014does Michael\u2019s armor begin to fall. As he is drawn into a troubling case that seems to transcend even Father Lucas\u2019s skill, he begins to glimpse a phenomenon science can\u2019t explain or control\u2026and an evil so violent and terrifying that it forces him to question everything he believes.<\/p>\n

Directed by Mikael H\u00e5fstr\u00f6m (\u201c1408\u201d), \u201cThe Rite\u201d stars Oscar\u00ae winner Anthony Hopkins (\u201cSilence of the Lambs\u201d), Colin O\u2019Donoghue in his feature film debut, Alice Braga (\u201cPredators\u201d), Toby Jones (\u201cFrost\/Nixon\u201d), with Ciar\u00e1n Hinds (\u201cHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows \u2013 Part 2\u201d), and Rutger Hauer (\u201cBatman Begins,\u201d \u201cBlade Runner\u201d).<\/p>\n

Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson (\u201cThe Exorcism of Emily Rose\u201d) produced the film under their Contrafilm banner. The screenplay is by Michael Petroni (\u201cThe Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader\u201d), suggested by the book by Matt Baglio. Richard Brener, Merideth Finn and Robert Bernacchi serve as executive producers, with Mark Tuohy co-producing.<\/p>\n

New Line Cinema presents, a Contrafilm production, a Mikael H\u00e5fstr\u00f6m film, \u201cThe Rite.\u201d The film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company. \u201cThe Rite\u201d has been rated PG-13 by the MPAA for disturbing thematic material, violence, frightening images and language including sexual references.<\/p>\n
