And sometimes I could do the editing in a month or something. This film was so dense and there was so much ground to cover. And it was so complicated and there were so many elements. There were historical elements. The cultural elements. The personal elements. And it took forever. I mean it took me on and off it and was about two years of editing. Then on top of that we were trying to make the film look good because we shot it in high definition and we wanted the old material to sort of match up. I mean that took several months to make it look polished enough and sound good enough. So it was a creative and a technical challenge to kind of lift the film up and coordinate everything into two hours.

What was the inspiration of making this film and what do you hope the goal of it is?

DM: In the beginning I just thought, well, I haven’t done a gospel film. So this will be good for me. I do almost all music films. And, on purpose, I’ve been trying to do different things. But of course what happens is you say yes to something like this and then you end up falling in love with it on a very deep level. And that’s what happened with me, too. I had, had some really great experiences with gospel music. One of the most intense concerts I ever saw was with James Cleveland and his choir. But this film engaged me on all kinds of levels, more than just technical or creative. It was a lot of the big issues about who wanted it to be a human being were sitting in front of me everyday. It was very inspirational and very life affirming because so many of the people that we came in touch with were so Christian and giving. And so much of the music was so inspiring.

Some of the footage that you have is pretty rare and exciting to see. Was there any difficulty in getting footage? Was there any footage that you couldn’t get your hands on?

DM: My partner and producer Joe Lauro is a great guy. He is a music enthusiast just as I am. He’s been collecting gospel clips for years. He got about as much as he could, which is a lot. That took some of the burden off of me research-wise. But the problem was I had to watch it all. This was an enormous amount of stuff. The thing about it was because Joe had a company, that steers film clips for different documentaries, that made it a lot easier because when we would choose films he either was in charge for getting those clips and just give it to the film or he knew who would have them so it was possible to use them without any difficulty. But, no, it was just such a massive job. It was very pleasurable, though. I was really enjoying looking at all the material. It became kind of tricky, though, editing that many clips. But sometimes it was so obvious when you would see like the first TV show that Mahalia Jackson ever did. Sure that had to go in the movie because she’s young and she’s in great voice and this is a wonderful performance.

Was it at all any difficulty to try and convince Smokey Robinson and others to come on and talk about God and Christianity?

DM: Not at all. It was really delightful meeting all the interview subjects because they basically are so comfortable with their Christianity and the fact that they want to give to other people. They were very eager to give on this film. I felt that very strongly with Mavis Staples. She really wanted to air her beliefs and how she felt about things in addition to her personal stories. Smokey Robinson was a complete delight. I mean we would talk a lot before we shot. He ended up becoming sort of my voice in the film, because most of my feelings about religion are exactly his feelings. I really found him to be a kindred spirit with a beautiful soul who saw the positive aspects of religion. He’s so enthusiastic and so articulate. And I just was really impressed with him. But I was impressed with everybody who was involved with it. Andrae Crouch was wonderful, too. They were just so giving and they wanted to share the message.

Documentaries are not always an easy sell, especially during the summer season. What do you think is going to be the selling point for folks to come out and see this during the summer as we’re getting a lot of these big budgeted films at multiplexes?

DM: I think sometimes when the big budget films are kind of disappointing, which happens sometimes, sometimes I like a lot of the Hollywood films. But sometimes they aren’t so fun or they’re not that interesting. It’s really nice of there’s something else out there. It could be an independent American film or a foreign film or documentary. I think a lot of people, this is really true at Christmas actually, most of the biggest film efforts were independent movies like ‘Black Swan’ and ‘The Fighter’ and ‘True Grit’. These were films that were sort of made outside of the studio system. They were gigantic successes. I think an audience is going to look for a good film, particularly if the Hollywood films disappoint them on some level. But I also am looking at this for the long run. I’m really hoping that people will be watching this in a year or ten years or twenty years. And I hope they do. I think they will. Because the music is so enduring.

What’s next for you?

DM: Well, I feel very blessed because just recently, see I live in Europe. I live in Denmark. I was wondering, ‘What am I going to do now? What am I going to do now?’ This was so time consuming and such a great project. In the back of my head I thought, ‘Well, I’d really like to do another kind of music. Another kind of musician.’ A friend called and he says, ‘I have a film for you. We have to start tomorrow.’ It was about a classical conductor. So it’s a big leap in another area. And I’m really happy about that. I’m getting excited about listening to Beethoven again and Mozart. What a delight listening to Sister Rosetta Tharpe and the Blind Boys of Alabama.

Rejoice and ShoutAn Interview with director Don McGlynn By Wilson Morales June 3, 2011 Opening up in New York on June 3, with other markets to follow is Don McGlynn‘s inspiring documentary on the history of gospel featuring Smokey Robinson, Andrae Crouch, Mavis Staples, Ira Tucker, Marie Knight, Willa Ward and Ira Tucker Jr. ‘Rejoice […] More

[18,143
4322,3953,4326,3628,151,4330,4334,4335,4337,4339,4343

0":"post-60590","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-interviews","8":"category-read","9":"tag-andrae-crouch","10":"tag-documentary","11":"tag-don-mcglynn","12":"tag-gospel","13":"tag-interview","14":"tag-ira-tucker","15":"tag-marie-knight","16":"tag-mavis-staples","17":"tag-rejoice-and-shout","18":"tag-smokey-robinson","19":"tag-willa-ward
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v19.7 (Yoast SEO v27.3) -
