The &#8216;<strong>ABFF Honors<\/strong>&#8216; event was hosted by actors <strong>Regina King and <\/strong><strong>Anthony Anderson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-10215\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/07\/abff-announces-2011-winners\/regina-king-and-anthony-anderson\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-10215\" title=\"Regina King and Anthony Anderson\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 225'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Regina-King-and-Anthony-Anderson-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>Anderson and King thanked Jeff Friday and the festival for giving them a venue where they could see a host of blacks films, whether they had distribution or not. The  award was presented by actress <strong>Jaszmine Lewis<\/strong> and <strong>Alisa Joseph<\/strong>. VP, Marketing and  Communications at Wachovia, A Wells Fargo Company, the winner receives  film stock valued at $5000.<\/p>\n<p>Starring <strong>Aunjanue Ellis<\/strong>, <strong>Frank Vincent, Armando  Riesco<\/strong>, <strong>Nathan Corbett, Annie Parisse<\/strong> and  <strong>Michael Morris,<\/strong> the film, which is based on the award winning  short of the same name, is a life shattering tragedy that sends three people on  vastly different paths to a similar goal of redemption and understanding.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-10218\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/07\/abff-announces-2011-winners\/yolanda-rodgers-howsie-and-osas-ighodaro-1\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-10218\" title=\"Yolanda Rodgers-Howsie and Osas Ighodaro 1\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 225'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Yolanda-Rodgers-Howsie-and-Osas-Ighodaro-1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Accepting the award for producer <strong>Melissa Miller<\/strong> were Miss  Black USA 2010 Nigerian beauty\/actress <strong>Osas Ighodaro<\/strong> and <strong>Yolanda Rodgers-Howsie<\/strong>, Co-Chair, Arts and Letters  Commission of Delta Sigma Theta.<\/p>\n<p>The Grand Jury Prize for Best Performance by an Actor was a tie with  <strong>Persia White <\/strong>for her performance in &#8216;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/06\/dysfunctional-friends\/\">Dysfunctional  Friends,<\/a><\/strong>&#8216; and to <strong>Lonyo Engele<\/strong> for his performance in &#8216;<strong>David is Dying<\/strong>.&#8217;\u00a0 The award was presented by actress <strong>Terri J. Vaughn <\/strong>and <strong>Mark Pitts<\/strong>, VP and General Manager of Coffee and  Tea for Coco-Cola. Fox, Hakeem  Kae-Kazim<\/strong>, and <strong>Billy Zane<\/strong>, &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/06\/black-gold\/\">Black Gold<\/a>&#8216; is about one  local Niger Delta community, who led by an orphan struggle against its own  government and a multi-national oil corporation that has plundered their land  and destroyed the environment. Through an intense therapy session, David  takes us on a dark, pernicious journey that displays the ugly side of love.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-10222\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/07\/abff-announces-2011-winners\/ryan-coogler\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-10222\" title=\"Ryan Coogler\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 225'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Ryan-Coogler-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>The HBO Short Film Award was given to &#8216;<strong>FIG<\/strong>,&#8217; which was  directed by <strong>Ryan Coogler<\/strong>. The $20,000 grand prize award was  presented by <strong>Olivia Smashum <\/strong>and <strong>Lucinda Martinez-Decir <\/strong>of HBO.<\/p>\n<p>The short centers on Candace, a young, single mother in South Los Angeles. One night, when she  is without food or money, she makes a desperate choice\u2013and risks losing the most  important thing in her life, as the bond with her daughter is put to the  ultimate test.<\/p>\n<p>In the first ever GMC Faith and Family Screenplay  Competition, the winner was <strong>David Martyn Conley<\/strong> of St.  Louis for his feature film  screenplay entitled, &#8216;<strong>Raising Izzie<\/strong>.&#8217; The $5000 Grand  Prize award was presented by singer <strong>Eric Benet and DeEtta West.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-10223\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/07\/abff-announces-2011-winners\/david-martyn-conley\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-10223\" title=\"David Martyn Conley\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 225'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/David-Martyn-Conley-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/strong>Benet&#8217;s film, &#8216;<strong>Trinity Goodheart<\/strong>,&#8217; had an exclusive sneak-preview screening at the festival. The film will air on GMC in August.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s HBO Star Project two grand-prize winners are <strong>Tiffany D.  Hobbs<\/strong> of Dallas and <strong>Sheaun McKinney<\/strong> from Los Angeles.  The award was presented by <strong>Kendra Carter<\/strong>, Director of Talent  Diversity Initiatives, NBC Universal Casting, actor <strong>Mekhi  Phifer<\/strong>, and <strong>Debra Langford<\/strong>, Vice President, Inclusion  and Business Diversity, NBC Universal.<\/p>\n<p>Star Project is an international acting competition for emerging  multicultural artists. The winners are afforded the opportunity to audition for  a leading casting director and one person will be selected to participate in a  walk on role on the award-winning NBC daytime drama <strong>&#8216;Days of Our  Lives.&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-10224\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/07\/abff-announces-2011-winners\/tiffany-d-hobbs-and-sheaun-mckinney\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-10224\" title=\"Tiffany D. To  date, Hobbs has been cast in the lead role in numerous SMU campus production,  including Carise in \u201cLa Dispute,\u201d Mrs. Gibbs in \u201cOur Town,\u201d and Gloria in \u201cYou  Never Can Tell.\u201d  She is currently in Santa Rosa, Calif., in rehearsals for the  Summer Repertory Theater\u2019s productions of \u201cHairspray,\u201d \u201cCompany\u201d and \u201cThe Piano  Lesson.\u201d  Hobbs will be entering her final year in graduate school at SMU in the  fall.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-10225\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/07\/abff-announces-2011-winners\/sheaun-mckinney-and-tiffany-d-hobbs\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-10225\" title=\"Sheaun McKinney and Tiffany D. He has also expanded his repertoire in co-writing and  producing while starring in his own Web-based show &#8220;Make It Happen,&#8221; for which  he has received many accolades and is looking to shop around to networks later  this year.  McKinney attended Miami-Dade College and received an Associate in  Arts degree in theater education.<\/p>\n<p>The second annual national &#8216;Rising Icons&#8217; award was given to the talented  actress <strong>Naturi Naughton<\/strong>. Lewis Sr is also a cofounder of ABFF, which was original known as the Acapulco Black Film Festival.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In celebration of his success, and in recognition of his great talent,  producer, director, and actor <strong>Keenen Ivory Wayans<\/strong> was honored with the <strong>Entertainment Icon Award<\/strong><em> <\/em> at the festival&#8217;s culminating event, ABFF Honors.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-10233\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/07\/abff-announces-2011-winners\/keenen-ivory-wayans-and-robert-townsend\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-10233\" title=\"Keenen Ivory Wayans and Robert Townsend\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 225 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Keenen-Ivory-Wayans-and-Robert-Townsend-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Keenen&#8217;s credits includes writing and producing films from <strong>Eddie Murphy&#8217;s RAW, The Five Heartbeats, Scary Movie<\/strong>, and <strong>White Chicks<\/strong>. Before they were stars, he also gave comedians like <strong>Jim Carey, Jamie Foxx, and David Alan Grier <\/strong>a place to showcase their talent with his skit comedy show <strong>In Living Color<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Past  honorees have included <strong>Spike Lee, Melvin Van Peebles<\/strong>, and  <strong>Lee Daniels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Before accepting the award, the audience heard plenty of stories and saw clips of his Keenen&#8217;s work on from his longtime  friend <strong>Robert Townsend<\/strong> and his brothers, <strong>Damon Wayans,  Shawn Wayans<\/strong>, and nephew <strong>Damien Wayans<\/strong>. As a surprise,  Keenen&#8217;s junior high school teacher came on stage and spoke how gifted Keenen was that far back and she knew he would take those talents to greater heights.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a
