The theater actor, who has done some episodic TV work too, makes a major impression as Alike, a 17-year-old who comes out to her family and community. After the Sundance Film Festival, the film sold to Focus Features for a Christmas Day release.<\/p>\n<p><em>Pariah <\/em>continued to play the festival circuit and we met Oduye at the Toronto International Film Festival. She shared her thoughts on the film\u2019s potential impact on gay black youth and the communities they live in, and the homework assignments first time feature director Dee Rees gave her.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How is <\/strong><strong>Toronto<\/strong><strong> different from Sundance?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adepero Oduye:<\/strong> It\u2019s different in so many ways. You\u2019ve got to get dressed up and shoes and it\u2019s not cold and snow, but good vibes in the city and around the festival in both festivals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Adepero-Oduye.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-14105\" title=\"Adepero Oduye\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 280'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Adepero-Oduye-300x280.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"280\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Coming from TV and stage, what was the attraction to this film role?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adepero Oduye<\/strong>: When I read the breakdown, I could just tell it was something unique and different. I had never seen anything like this before. It just stood out to me. When I submitted myself, I wasn\u2019t submitting myself for a lead role. I was submitting myself for just an auxiliary character. I just was like I\u2019m just going to send my picture. This looks awesome for some reason. It looked fresh and just something different. That\u2019s why I sent my picture in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Which other characters in the script would you have gone for?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adepero Oduye:<\/strong> Well, in the breakdown, it was like Alike, Laura, somebody, somebody and at the end it was High School Student. I don\u2019t know why I didn\u2019t think about Alike . I just thought oh, maybe I\u2019ll get to play one of the high school students. I don\u2019t know why. I thought maybe I\u2019d play a high school student in a classroom or something.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Pariah-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-14106\" title=\"P\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 176'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Pariah-1-300x176.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"176\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>When this was coming to together for the short, how long had it been since you were in high school?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adepero Oduye<\/strong>: I\u2019d graduated college.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There\u2019s a long history of actors playing younger than their age. So by the time of the feature, it had been longer, how did you go back to that place?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adepero Oduye:<\/strong> Just that thing of when you\u2019re at that age of you don\u2019t know who you are, you\u2019re trying to figure it out but that somehow extends to people into their 20s. It\u2019s not something that ends in high school. It carries over for some people and some people even older. Hopefully it doesn\u2019t go for too long but that feeling of not belonging.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Pariah-3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-14107\" title=\"Pariah 3\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 144'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Pariah-3-300x144.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"144\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Did you do research in the gay community?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adepero Oduye:<\/strong> Well, for the short I read <em>Zami <\/em>by Audrey Lord and some other books. Then we had a homework assignment where we had to go into a black and Latino lesbian club in character and get a sense of that whole world. Go to a straight environment, go to Christopher Street Pier in character. Then Dee was just very open if I had any questions, to talk to her and ask her about anything. So she was available to me all the time. She was open about a lot of stuff.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Did anyone you met when you were in character connect with you romantically?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adepero Oduye:<\/strong> No, that\u2019s the thing. Alike does not know how to be. She doesn\u2019t fit. At this club, you either were very feminine or very masculine. Me as Alike during this assignment was very in the middle so people were ignoring me. They were just looking at me like: \u201cWe don\u2019t know what this person\u2019s about here. We can\u2019t place her so we don\u2019t know what she\u2019s about, so we\u2019re just going to ignore her.\u201d So I very much felt how Alike feels.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Adepero-Oduye-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-14108\" title=\"Adepero Oduye 2\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 222 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Adepero-Oduye-2-222x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>You felt like a pariah?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adepero Oduye:<\/strong> Yeah, I felt like I didn\u2019t belong and I felt tense and I felt like I couldn\u2019t really do anything. I didn\u2019t know how I was supposed to dance and just second guessing everything that I did. That\u2019s exhausting and I was like wow, this is it. This is exactly how Aike feels.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What a thrill it must be to get to experience that temporarily and have that as a tool.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Adepero Oduye: Yeah, yeah. I felt it when I read it. When I first read the script I felt it but then to feel it in a very visceral now way was like wow. To just see that environment, there\u2019s nothing like it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What was it like working with Dee Rees on her first feature?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adepero Oduye:<\/strong> She\u2019s amazing, awesome, she\u2019s very, very trusting. I trusted her implicitly and I felt very safe on set which allowed me to go to places that aren\u2019t necessarily the easiest places to go.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Dee-Rees.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-14109\" title=\"Dee Rees\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 200 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Dee-Rees-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Would she have directions that would be hard to take if you didn\u2019t trust the director?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adepero Oduye:<\/strong> It would be hard to go to those places if there wasn\u2019t a sense of trust on set for sure, yeah. I can\u2019t think of any conditions that would make a set not safe, but if you didn\u2019t feel like you\u2019d be protected or given space or time to either get into or come off of a certain scene. I think that\u2019s just an issue of respect and trust, that she trusts her actors and respects her actors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What was it like working with the rest of the cast?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adepero Oduye:<\/strong> I had the fortune of really getting to play with some amazing, just super committed, talented, giving actors, and funny and just really, really, really generous actors. That for me was a highlight.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Pariah-Cast.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-14110\" title=\"Pariah Cast\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 200'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Pariah-Cast-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>After the number of short films you did, including <em>Pariah<\/em>, what were the challenges of a full length feature?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adepero Oduye:<\/strong> I think just for me, a bit of fear because I\u2019ve never done it before. I realized wow, this is a lot. This is me doing a lot of this stuff. So just not wanting to mess it up. I kept thinking, \u201cGod, I don\u2019t want to mess this up, I don\u2019t want to mess this up.\u201d Also with the short, it did really well, so I felt a lot of high expectations for the feature. I wanted to make sure that I didn\u2019t mess it up. It sounds crazy but that\u2019s what I thought. Dee was very much like, \u201cThere\u2019s no possible way you can mess this up. You\u2019ve got this. You don\u2019t have to do anything extra. You\u2019ve got this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>How has your life changed since Sundance?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adepero Oduye:<\/strong> I have a great team of people that I work with. I guess just opportunities. People are familiar with my name I\u2019ve got to say, so opportunities to read things and just that whole thing of getting to see my dreams come true. More dramatic films, well written, gritty films.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are you writing a screenplay for yourself to star in?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adepero Oduye:<\/strong> Is it for myself? I don\u2019t know. I don\u2019t know yet. I\u2019m writing something that I\u2019d like to shoot. I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s for myself but it\u2019s a story that came to me that I just felt like I wanted to write. It\u2019s a short little script. We\u2019ll see what happens.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is it called and what is it about?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adepero Oduye:<\/strong> Oh, it\u2019s just the beginning of something and I don\u2019t have a name, I don\u2019t have a title for it. It\u2019s about a relationship. I just like really awesome material. If it\u2019s stage, if it\u2019s film, it all works for me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What sort of projects are you getting to read for now?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adepero Oduye:<\/strong> Just random films and mostly films right now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What connections have you felt with audiences who saw <em>Pariah <\/em>and then spoke to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adepero Oduye: <\/strong>Especially at Sundance, because people get the rare opportunity to question and talk to actors in films, people have been very generous and just sharing of their experiences of why the film means something to them. So that\u2019s been an honor, a big, big honor.
