Keynote address by Nelson George, live interviews, and a town hall meeting on the future of black cinema<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 1991, The New York Times Magazine<\/em> ran a cover story about the unprecedented number of black films released by Hollywood. Produced both inside and outside the studio system, these films heralded the arrival of a new generation of filmmakers, including Spike Lee, John Singleton, Mario Van Peebles, Robert Townsend, the Hudlin brothers<\/strong>, and Matty Rich<\/strong>. The films released that year, including Boyz n the Hood<\/em>, New Jack City<\/em>, Jungle Fever<\/em>, <\/strong>and Straight out of Brooklyn<\/em><\/strong>, sparked a cultural explosion that still reverberates. Author and film critic Nelson George will open the event with a keynote address including clips from key films of the era, followed by live interviews, onstage and via Skype, with major filmmakers from the period.<\/p>\n

The program will conclude with a town hall discussion, organized with the assistance of Sheril D. Antonio<\/strong>, Associate Dean at New York University\u2019s Tisch School of the Arts, and led by its faculty members. The discussion will focus on the trajectory of black cinema over the past twenty years, its impact on American culture, and its future direction.<\/p>\n

In 1991, 16<\/strong> African American\u2013directed movies were released theatrically, the most since the era of the race movie. Those titles included Daughters of the Dust, Jungle Fever , New Jack City , True Identity , The Five Heartbeats , House Party II , Talkin’ Dirty After Dark , Hangin’ with the Homeboys , Boyz N The Hood , Straight Out Of Brooklyn, Chameleon Street, A Rage in Harlem , Strictly Business , Living Large , To Sleep with Anger<\/strong>, and Up Against the Wall.<\/strong><\/div>\n
