2012 Spirit Award Nominations Announced<\/strong>by Wilson Morales<\/p>\n

Nominations for the 27th Film Independent Spirit Awards were announced on Tuesday morning at The London in West Hollywood by by Film Independent Senior Director Sean McManus<\/strong> and actors Anthony Mackie<\/strong> and Kate Beckinsale<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Among the nominees were Adepero Oduye<\/strong> for Best Actress in the film “Pariah” <\/strong>and Harmony Santana<\/strong> for Best Supporting Female in the film “Gun Hill Road.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Competing for Best Feature are “50\/50,” “The Descendants,” Beginners, “Drive,” “Take Shelter” <\/strong>and “The Artist.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Spirit Awards is open to feature films of at least 70 minutes, provided they have been made for no more than $20 million and played for a week in a commercial theater or been exhibited at one of six notable film festivals.<\/p>\n

Films must also be determined to be independent in the judgment of one of the Film Independent committees that determine nominees. Major studio films can be deemed independent if they are made with “economy of means” and deal with “original and provocative” subject matter.<\/p>\n

The 2012 Film Independent Spirit Awards will take place on Saturday, February 25, and will be broadcast later that evening on IFC.<\/strong><\/p>\n
