{"id":62129,"date":"2011-12-26T11:06:34","date_gmt":"2011-12-26T11:06:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/0de2709a84.nxcli.net\/0-kjasnb\/2011\/12\/26\/aasha-davis-talks-pariah\/"},"modified":"2018-12-18T13:16:33","modified_gmt":"2018-12-18T13:16:33","slug":"aasha-davis-talks-pariah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/aasha-davis-talks-pariah\/","title":{"rendered":"Aasha Davis Talks Pariah"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/12\/pariah-ny-premiere\/\">Pariah<\/a>An Interview with Aasha Davis<\/strong><br \/>\nBy Wilson Morales<\/p>\n<p>December 26, 2011<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Pariah-Poster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-16374\" title=\"Pariah Poster\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 202 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Pariah-Poster-202x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Having done numerous episodic work on various TV series such as a <strong>\u2018Gilmore Girls,\u2019 \u2018Grey\u2019s Anatomy,\u2019 House,\u2019 <\/strong>and best known for her roles as Waverly Grady on <strong>\u2018Friday Night Lights\u2019<\/strong> and Chelsea Lewis on <strong>\u2018South of Nowhere,\u2019 <\/strong>actress <strong>Aasha Davis<\/strong> will next be seen on the big screen in the Sundance Film Festival favorite, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/12\/pariah-ny-premiere\/\">\u2018Pariah.\u2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Directed by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/11\/dee-rees-talks-pariah\/\">Dee Rees <\/a><\/strong>and opening in limited theaters on Dec.28 before expanding nationwide in early 2012, the film stars <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/10\/adepero-oduye-talks-pariah\/\"><strong>Adepero Oduye<\/strong> <\/a>as Alike, a 17-year-old African-American Brooklyn teenager who\u2019s juggling conflicting identities and risks friendship, heartbreak, and family in a desperate search for sexual expression.<\/p>\n<p>Also featured in the film are <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/10\/kim-wayans-talks-pariah\/\">Kim Wayans<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/12\/pernell-walker-talks-pariah\/\">Pernell Walker<\/a>, Charles Parnell, and Sahra Mallesse<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\">Blackfilm.com<\/a><\/strong> recently spoke with Davis about her role in the film and the bond she created with the cast.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Aasha-Davis-7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-17250\" title=\"Aasha Davis 7\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 200 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Aasha-Davis-7-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s your role in the film and what was the attraction to being part of it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Aasha Davis:<\/strong> I play Bina and she\u2019s the girl that Alike\u2019s mom wants her to hang out with to be a good influence on her. What attracted me to the role was the script. It was the entire story and not just my character in particular, and how important the film was. I just wanted to be a part of it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What sort of back-story did you give for Bina?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Aasha Davis: <\/strong>She\u2019s someone who\u2019s just excited to experience the world. She\u2019s interested in finding out who she can be and just wants to dabble and see who she is. It\u2019s a coming-of-age story and those feelings of who am I and what part do I play in this world.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Aasha-Davis-and-Adepero-Oduye.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-17251\" title=\"Aasha Davis and Adepero Oduye\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 199'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Aasha-Davis-and-Adepero-Oduye-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>From its premiere at Sundance to its December release, how excited are you that it\u2019s finally coming out in theaters?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Aasha Davis: <\/strong>Oh my goodness! It\u2019s so exciting. I remember feeling how important the story was from the beginning and you never know how it\u2019s going to connect with other people as fully as it does with your own heart. It feels great and wonderful that other people are recognizing the power of this film.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How was working with Dee Rees and Adepero (Oduye)?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Aasha Davis: <\/strong>Dee Rees is so organized and a complete director. She gives you every details about your character and you can talk to her about anything. Adepero\u2019s this wonderful spirit. During shooting she would make hats around craft services. I too can relate by having the feeling of how I am going to portray. It may be a young story, but as the economy changes and as life changes, you have to figure out what\u2019s the next step or the next thing I could be in and how I would be accepted for that. Every person I saw coming out of the screening, I could see how the film affected them. Whether it was a hand shake, a nod, or the punch in the arm that I would get, their reaction is a satisfying feeling and that\u2019s wonderful.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Pariah-cast-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-17253\" title=\"Pariah cast 2\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 198'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Pariah-cast-2-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>From its premiere at Sundance until now, what else have you been working on?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Aasha Davis: <\/strong>I did an episode of <strong>\u2018Castle,\u2019 <\/strong>and what a great family of cast and crew. They were welcoming and when ever you do episodic work, like one or two episodes on a show, you never know how people will treat you or if you will fit in, or if it\u2019s going to be hard or busy. But it was an amazing experience to work on the show and surrounded by so much support. I\u2019m also working on some other things, but you\u2019ll see me again.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Because of the long journey the film has taken before its release, have you and the cast developed a great bond?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Aasha Davis: <\/strong>Yes. I just saw Charles Parnell the other day. He was at my house. We\u2019re going to be bonded for the rest of our lives because of this important film. It\u2019s not like anything anyone has seen before.
