{"id":62142,"date":"2011-12-27T11:50:09","date_gmt":"2011-12-27T11:50:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/0de2709a84.nxcli.net\/0-kjasnb\/2011\/12\/27\/the-10-black-breakouts-of-2011\/"},"modified":"2018-12-18T13:16:34","modified_gmt":"2018-12-18T13:16:34","slug":"the-10-black-breakouts-of-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/the-10-black-breakouts-of-2011\/","title":{"rendered":"The 10 Black Breakouts of 2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The 10 Blacks Breakouts of 2011<\/strong>By Wilson Morales<\/p>\n<p>December 27, 2011<\/p>\n<p>As the 2011 year is set to close in a few days, it\u2019s time look back and acknowledge some of the performers that stood out this year from newcomers and veteran talent who elevated their game to another level.<\/p>\n<p>There were plenty of directors, producers, and actors that brought attention to the films they did and while some of theses films may not have the luxury of having played in numerous theaters or becoming box office hits, the journey that each took or displayed was worthy of attention that captured audiences throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p>In no particular order, here are the 10 Black Breakouts of 2011.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Dee-Rees-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-15621\" title=\"Dee Rees 3\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 286 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Dee-Rees-3-286x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"286\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/11\/dee-rees-talks-pariah\/\">Dee Rees<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First shown at Sundance as a short story in 2008, writer\/director <strong>Dee Rees<\/strong> came back to the festival in 2011 with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/12\/pariah-ny-premiere\/\">\u2018Pariah\u2019<\/a> <\/strong>as a full length feature and the raving articles and accolades the film has received thus far have been well deserved. Not only has she written a universal coming-of-age film about a lesbian teenager who unsuccessfully juggles multiple identities to avoid rejection from her friends and family, but &#8216;Pariah\u2019 boasts some strong performances from its cast (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/\">Adepero Oduye<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/10\/kim-wayans-talks-pariah\/\">Kim Wayans<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/12\/pernell-walker-talks-pariah\/\">Pernell Walker<\/a>, Charles Parnell, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/12\/aasha-davis-talks-pariah\/\">Aasha Davis<\/a><\/strong> and <strong>Sahra Mallesse<\/strong>). Rees recently won Breakthrough Director at the 2011 Gotham Independent Awards, Best Director and Best Screenplay from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/12\/the-black-film-critics-circle-awards-2011\/\">The Black Film Critics Circle<\/a><\/strong>, and is nominated for several awards in the upcoming Black Reel Awards.  Coming up for Rees is a project she\u2019s developing for HBO with <strong>Viola Davis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Viola-Davis-and-Octavia-Spencer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-17315\" title=\"Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Viola-Davis-and-Octavia-Spencer-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><strong>Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Having spent years playing supporting roles, including receiving many accolades and an Academy Award Best Supporting Actress nomination in 2008 for her role in \u2018Doubt,\u2019 <strong>Viola Davis<\/strong> stepped her game up with an amazing performance in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/04\/the-help\/\">\u2018The Help,\u2019<\/a> <\/strong>and might be the first African American actress to receive a second Oscar nomination, but for a different category, Best Actress.  Currently on screen in a supporting turn for Stephen Daldry\u2019s <strong>\u2018Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,\u2019 <\/strong>Davis\u2019s next leading role is opposite <strong>Maggie Gyllenhaal<\/strong> in Walden Media\u2019s <strong>\u2018Won\u2019t Back Down.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A year ago, most people can honestly say they never heard of her. Yes, we had seen her in films but couldn&#8217;t place her name. Much like her fellow colleague Viola Davis, <strong>Octavia Spencer<\/strong> had spent over ten years playing small parts in numerous films. When the time and role came for her to \u201cshow &#8217;em what you got,\u201d she gave us an electrifying performance as Minnie the maid in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/04\/the-help\/\">\u2018The Help\u2019 <\/a><\/strong>that will eventually merit an Oscar nomination and bigger roles in the future. One of her next films is a role opposite <strong>Julianne Hough <\/strong>and <strong>Russell Brand<\/strong> in <strong>Diablo Cody<\/strong>\u2019s directorial debut.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Ava-DuVernay.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-17316\" title=\"Ava DuVernay\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 200'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Ava-DuVernay-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.indiewire.com\/shadowandact\/shadow-and-act-2011-toasts-ava-duvernay-affrm\">Ava Duvernay<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.indiewire.com\/shadowandact\/10-questions-with-ava-duvernay-i-will-follow-middle-of-nowhere-affrm\">Ava Duvernay<\/a><\/strong> spent her early years working and promoting talent as a publicist, but Duvernay became the talent when she fulfilled her dream and directed an independent feature film called<strong> &#8216;I Will Follow.&#8217; <\/strong>Bucking the studio system, DuVernay even started her own distribution company <strong>AFFRM<\/strong> (African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement) that will allow filmmakers another option for theatrical release. AFFRM\u2019s second film to be released in 2011 was the critical favorite<strong> \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/11\/kinyarwanda\/\">Kinyarwanda<\/a>,\u2019<\/strong> while DuVernay\u2019s second feature <strong>\u2018Middle of Nowhere\u2019 <\/strong>will make its debut at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/John-Boyega-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-14250\" title=\"John Boyega 1\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 197 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/John-Boyega-1-197x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"197\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/07\/attack-the-block-john-boyega-interview\/\">John Boyega<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Who knew that a small sci-fi alien film that starred a host of up-and-coming Black actors would make a star out of <strong>John Boyega<\/strong>? As the leader Moses in <strong>Joe Cornish<\/strong>\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/03\/attack-the-block\/\">\u2018Attack the Block,\u2019 <\/a><\/strong>Boyega showed that at a young age, he has the chops to be a leading actor. Hollywood is constantly trying to promote a new actor every year and lavish them with three or four leading roles. Let\u2019s hope they can do the same with Boyega and he\u2019ll prove them right. Look for him next in <strong>Spike Lee<\/strong>\u2019s new HBO\u2019s series, <strong>\u2018Da Brick.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Steve-McQueen-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-16207\" title=\"Steve McQueen 3\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 213 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Steve-McQueen-3-213x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"213\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/11\/steve-mcqueen-talks-shame-interview\/\">Steve McQueen<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While <strong>Steve McQueen<\/strong> was already acknowledged overseas a few years ago for his work with <strong>Michael Fassbender<\/strong> in<strong> &#8216;Hunger,&#8217;<\/strong> most American audiences got to know him this year as he teamed again with Fassbender in the controversial sex film, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/03\/shame\/\">&#8216;Shame.&#8217; <\/a><\/strong>With a cast that also included <strong>Carey Mulligan, James Badge Dale<\/strong> and <strong>Nicole Beharie<\/strong> and shot in the heart of New York City, McQueen put himself in a new lineup of directors whose films people want to see. His next film <strong>\u201912 Years As A Slave\u2019 <\/strong>reunites him again with Fassbender, and will feature also <strong>Chiwetel Ejiofor<\/strong> and <strong>Brad Pitt<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Kevin-Hart-7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-10683\" title=\"Kevin Hart 7\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 241 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Kevin-Hart-7-241x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"241\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Kevin Hart<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes, we know <strong>Kevin Hart<\/strong>&#8216;s been acting for a minute now and hasn\u2019t had the best film credits to his name (\u2018Paper Soldiers,\u2019 &#8216;Soul Plane,&#8217; \u2018In The Mix,\u2019 \u2018Meet Dave\u2019) thus far; but Hart stuck with it for years and when his time came up to deliver again, he brought the house down with his stand-up film, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/09\/laugh-at-my-pain\/\">&#8216;Laugh At My Pain.&#8217;<\/a> <\/strong>Distributed by Codeblack Entertainment and shown in fewer theaters than the average independent film, the film&#8217;s opening week numbers took Hollywood by storm as it grossed over $2 million dollars. Look for Hart to bring you more laughs in 2012 in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/12\/will-packer-talks-think-like-a-man\/\">Will Packer<\/a> produced film,<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/10\/think-like-a-man\/\">\u2018Think Like A Man.\u2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Christopher-Wallace-Jr..jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-17317\" title=\"Christopher Wallace, Jr.\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 168'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Christopher-Wallace-Jr.-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Christopher &#8220;C.J.&#8221; Wallace, Jr.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When <strong>Will Farrell<\/strong>\u2019s independent film, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/04\/everything-must-go\/\">\u2018Everything Must Go,\u2019<\/a><\/strong> was shown in festivals before hitting theaters, no one knew that the breakout star of the film would be <strong>Christopher Jordan Wallace<\/strong>, <strong>Jr.<\/strong>,son of the late <strong>Biggie Smalls<\/strong> and <strong>Faith Evans<\/strong>. Although he made his film debut in his father\u2019s 2009 biopic \u2018Notorious,\u2019 the 14-year old really held his own opposite Farrell as he played a neighborhood boy who befriends the struggling and depressed Ferrell and helps him through his emotional and financial crisis.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/The-First-Grader-1a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-5884\" title=\"The First Grader 1a\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 199'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/The-First-Grader-1a-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Oliver Litondo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While <strong>Oliver Litondo<\/strong>&#8216;s film credits includes character roles in\u00a0 &#8216;The Wilby Conspiracy&#8217; with Sydney Poitier and Michael Caine, &#8216;The Bush Trackers,&#8217; and the TV movie &#8216;Ivory Hunters&#8217;, he was given the lead role opposite <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/05\/the-first-grader-naomie-harris-interview\/\">Naomie Harris<\/a><\/strong> in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/04\/the-first-grader\/\">\u2018The First Grader,\u2019<\/a><\/strong> a film about Kimani N&#8217;gan&#8217;ga Maruge, the world&#8217;s oldest primary school student at the age of 84. Litondo gave in a tremendous performance. We finally got to meet its creator, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/10\/kevin-clash-talks-being-elmo-a-puppeteer%E2%80%99s-journey\/\">Kevin Clash<\/a><\/strong>, of this extraordinary Muppet and still growing phenomenon in the superb documentary<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/09\/being-elmo-a-puppeteers-journey\/\">\u2018Being Elmo: A Puppeteer\u2019s Journey.\u2019<\/a><\/strong> From a young adolescent who brought his creation to school to working with Captain Kangaroo to meeting his idol Jim Henson and then creating Elmo and being part of the Sesame Street family, Clash\u2019s story is one that must be seen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Hoji-Fortuna-Manie-Malone-and-Director-Djo-Tunda-wa-Munga-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-17319\" title=\"Hoji-Fortuna-Manie-Malone-and-Director-Djo-Tunda-wa-Munga-2\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 225'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Hoji-Fortuna-Manie-Malone-and-Director-Djo-Tunda-wa-Munga-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/05\/viva-riva\/\">\u2018Viva Riva!\u2019<\/a> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2011\/05\/viva-riva\/\">\u2018Viva Riva!\u2019<\/a><\/strong> is the tale of Riva (<strong>Patsha Bay<\/strong>), a small time operator who has just returned to his hometown of Kinshasa, Congo after a decade away, with a major score: a fortune in hijacked gasoline. Directed by <strong>Djo Tunda wa Munga<\/strong>, with a cast that also included <strong>Manie Malone, Hoji Fortuna<\/strong>, and <strong>Marlene Longange<\/strong>, the film went on to win <strong>6 African Movie Academy Awards<\/strong> and was the recent recipient of the <strong>2011 MTV Movie Award for best African film<\/strong>. With no movie theaters on site, it was the first movie to be filmed in the Democratic Republic of Congo in over 20 years.
