Blackfilm.com would like to thank <strong>The ABFF<\/strong> and The Greater Miami Convention &#038; Visitors Bureau (<strong>GMCVB<\/strong>) for hosting us at this year\u2019s American Black Film Festival. Actors <strong>Sufe Bradshaw, Adina Porter, Michael K. Williams, Nelsan Ellis, JB Smoove<\/strong> and Essence magazine&#8217;s <strong>Cori Murray<\/strong> were on hand to give perspective to attendee&#8217;s on the importance of diversity in the industry and how it strengthens the HBO experience. The $20,000 grand prize award was presented by <strong>Lucinda Martinez<\/strong>, Vice President, Domestic Network Distribution &amp; Multicultural Marketing of HBO, and <strong>Bevy Smith<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The short centers on <strong>Angie Adams<\/strong> (played by Tracey Heggins), a deeply spiritual young girl. Blessed with an intense tolerance for pain, Angie has developed into a prolifically successful underground streetfighter. Jazmin &#8220;Jazz&#8221; Welles and her fianc\u00e9 &#8220;Blac&#8221; are taking a non-traditional approach to their nuptials. The award was presented by <strong>Kendra Carter<\/strong>, Director of Talent Diversity Initiatives, NBC Universal Casting.<\/p>\n<p>Star Project is an international acting competition for emerging multicultural artists. The winners are afforded the opportunity to audition for a leading casting director and one person will be selected to participate in a walk on role on the award-winning NBC daytime drama \u2018<strong>Days of Our Lives<\/strong>.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/ABFF-2012-Star-Project-winners-Sherial-McKinney-and-Robert-Hunter.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-25317\" title=\"ABFF 2012 Star Project winners Sherial McKinney and Robert Hunter\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 200 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/ABFF-2012-Star-Project-winners-Sherial-McKinney-and-Robert-Hunter-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>McKinney, an Orange County native, was raised (along with her five sisters) by her adoptive family from the age of 10 years old. Though her professional career began just a few years ago, McKinney\u2019s talent and determination have allowed her to work with hit director Melina Matsoukas in the UK release of Leona Lewis\u2019s \u201cBleeding Love\u201d as the dramatic lead, garner a lead role in the Netflix featured film \u201cHe\u2019s on My Mind\u201d (2009), and host for Style Network\u2019s producers of Vimby.com. Recently, McKinney has also been seen in TV One\u2019s newest series \u201cWill to Live.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hunter started in theatre with the roles of Frank Elgin in the Clifford Odets play \u201cThe Country Girl\u201d and East in John Cariani\u2019s romantic comedy \u201cAlmost Maine.\u201d Hunter made his film debut in 2011 when he starred in a short film entitled \u201cLA Bros.\u201d Hunter is a young actor who is focused on traveling and learning from the best.<\/p>\n<p>The award for best documentary was given to \u2018<strong>Soul Food Junkies<\/strong>,\u2019 written and directed by <strong>Byron Hurt<\/strong> and produced by <strong>Lisa Durden<\/strong>. The award was presented by a CNN spokesperson.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Soul-Food-Junkies-director-Byron-Hurt-on-stage.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-25318\" title=\"Soul Food Junkies director Byron Hurt on stage\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 225'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Soul-Food-Junkies-director-Byron-Hurt-on-stage-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Soul Food Junkies&#8217;<\/strong> explores the history and social significance of soul food to black cultural identity and its affect on African-American health, good and bad. Soul food will also be used as the lens to investigate the dark side of the food industry and the growing food justice movement that has been born in its wake.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s festival Ambassador, actress <strong>Tracey Ellis Ross<\/strong>, came on stage to thank <strong>Jeff Friday<\/strong> for all the work he had done to make the festival a success and also gave a shout-out to <strong>Bill Duke<\/strong> for his documentary, &#8216;<strong>Dark Girls<\/strong>.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/ABFF-2012-Ambassador-Tracey-Ellis-Ross-on-stage-with-Jeff-and-Nicole-Friday.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-25319\" title=\"ABFF 2012 Ambassador Tracey Ellis Ross on stage with Jeff and Nicole Friday\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 225'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/ABFF-2012-Ambassador-Tracey-Ellis-Ross-on-stage-with-Jeff-and-Nicole-Friday-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As this year\u2019s Grand Jury President, Actor, <strong>Mekhi Phifer<\/strong> (\u201cLie to Me,\u201d \u201cER\u201d), served as a judge and presented prizes in front of the festival audience.<\/p>\n<p>The Grand Jury Prize for Best Performance by an Actor was a tie with <strong>Malinda Williams<\/strong> for her performance in \u2018<strong>The Undershepherd<\/strong>,\u2018 and to <strong>Sheldon Shepherd<\/strong> for his performance in \u2018<strong>Better Mus Come<\/strong>.\u2019 The award was presented by <strong>Mark Pitts<\/strong>, VP and General Manager of Coffee and Tea for Coco-Cola. She\u2019s the first lady of this mega church and the theme around the film is on the church and corruption. It\u2019s also a person being corrupted by power and that\u2019s Isaiah in the film. People\u2019s morals get questioned in the film based on the power and money and things that surround running a mega church that way. .<\/p>\n<p>Sheldon Shepherd plays the lead role of &#8220;Ricky&#8221; in &#8216;<strong>Better Mus Come<\/strong>&#8216;, which follows warring political factions in 1970s Jamaica as they enlist the support of gangs to enforce their policies, and advanced their political agenda.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/ABFF-2012-Best-Screenplay-winner-Matthew-A.-Cherry.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-25322\" title=\"ABFF 2012 Best Screenplay winner Matthew A. Cherry<\/strong> for his film, \u2018<strong>The Last Fall<\/strong>.\u2019 The award was presented by a Ciroc brand manager.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;The Last Fall&#8221;<\/strong> is a coming of age sports drama about the difficulties an NFL journeyman faces when trying to transition to life after his playing days are over. The winner receives film stock valued at $5000.<\/p>\n<p>Parr&#8217;s film was also given the Grand Jury Prize for Best Film. The award was presented by <strong>Connie Orlando<\/strong>, VP of Original Programming at BET Networks. The winner receives film stock valued at $5000.<\/p>\n<p>The film centers on best friends LC and Roland, two young, ambitious ministers who are climbing the ranks at the First Baptist Church. Coming up under the leadership of Dr. Ezekial Canon, the church\u2019s elderly pastor, Roland and LC have dreams of becoming the predecessors of the aging pastor. But, the feeble Dr. Canon stubbornly refuses to step-down, forcing the two young ministers to make pivotal decisions that ultimately fray the fabric of their deeply-woven friendship. He was the 2011 winner of the GMC Faith and Family Screenplay Competition. Directed by <strong>Roger M.
