FilmBuff <\/strong>will release “The Russian Winter<\/a><\/strong>,” a documentary film about singer-songwriter John Forte<\/a>‘<\/strong>s concert tour, on Oct. 23.<\/p>\n

The film, directed by Petter Ringbom<\/strong>, premiered at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival.<\/p>\n

“The Russian Winter<\/strong>” will be available on movies-on-demand and VOD services. Following the commercial release of the documentary, Forte plans to release a full-length studio soundtrack from the film.<\/p>\n

Born in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the United States and nominated for a Grammy at age 21 for his work on the multi-platinum Fugees album The Score, John Fort\u00e9\u2019s life has brought triumphs and adversity the likes of which few people have known. Fort\u00e9 was educated at the prestigious Phillips Exeter Academy and then NYU, before his life changed dramatically in 2001 when he was convicted of drug possession and sentenced to 14 years in federal prison. But in 2008 Fort\u00e9\u2019s prison sentence was remarkably commuted and he was given a second chance to share his talents with the world.<\/p>\n

As much an inspirational concert tour as it is a personal journey, The Russian Winter follows Fort\u00e9 and his band for three months to Moscow and beyond, where they collaborate with local musicians, perform for a host of unlikely audiences, and learn various ways to communicate with a foreign world. As for Fort\u00e9, the trip may have begun with the goal of sharing music, but in the end it is just as much about hearing and learning from the music of others.<\/p>\n

Featured players in “The Russian Winter” include Raekwon<\/strong> and Natasha Bedingfield<\/strong>. Forte also performed with SunSay, Alina Orlova, Billy’s Band, Zero People, Margulis<\/strong> and Romario<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The trip, which began in February 2011, took Forte from Moscow to St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Ekaterinburg, and other stops along the Trans-Siberian Railway.<\/p>\n
