Williams<\/strong> (Boardwalk Empire, 12 Years as a Slave) have received high profile projects and bigger exposure, there are others who have continued to work in the business, on the big and small screen, yet haven&#8217;t been given the higher exposure that will garner more attention for bigger projects.<\/p>\n<p>One of those actors happens to be <strong>Gbenga Akinnagbe<\/strong>. Towards the end of The Wire series, Gbenga played the role of the murderous mobster Chris, who was always hanging with Snoop.<\/p>\n<p>Since the series went off the air, the Detroit native has worked steadily, landing projects such as<strong> The Lottery Ticket<\/strong> opposite <strong>Ice Cube<\/strong>, and recurring role on <strong>&#8216;The Good Wife.&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>More recently, Akinnagbe had a recurring role on Direct TV&#8217;s <strong>Damages<\/strong> opposite <strong>Glenn Close<\/strong> and<strong> Rose Byrne<\/strong>. He&#8217;s also on Showtime&#8217;s <strong>Nurse Jackie<\/strong> with Emmy winner <strong>Edie Falco<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Gbenga-Akinnagbe-damages.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-full wp-image-29654\" title=\"Gbenga Akinnagbe damages\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Gbenga-Akinnagbe-damages.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Blackfilm.com recently caught up with Akinnagbe about his work and upcoming projects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s your role on &#8216;Damages?&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gbenga Akinnagbe:<\/strong> I had a recurring role. There was a character that was on the show last year and he and Rose Byrne&#8217;s character got close. He was a former Marine. The character is not on the show this year but sent my character to help and look out for her. I&#8217;m ex-special forces but now I do intel for Rose&#8217;s character.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are you also back on Showtime&#8217;s &#8216;Nurse Jackie?&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>GA:<\/strong> I don&#8217;t know. When you&#8217;re doing recurring work, they hit you up if you&#8217;re available. The way it was left last season, there&#8217;s a possibility that I may be back for the new season.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Gbenga-Akinnagbe-Nurses.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-29655\" title=\"Gbenga Akinnagbe Nurses\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 199'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Gbenga-Akinnagbe-Nurses-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Does doing recurring work a positive thing? Is does offer one time to do other projects or would you rather a series regular?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>GA: <\/strong>That&#8217;s a great question. It&#8217;s good and bad. You want a home. You want a place where you can say that this is your show that you invested in with other actors, but there&#8217;s also that flexibility of being a recurring actor. I&#8217;ve done that on a number of shows and that&#8217;s what ended up happening here by chance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can you talk about your upcoming projects like &#8216;Big Words?&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/dorianyayagbenga.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-29656\" title=\"dorianyayagbenga\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 176'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/dorianyayagbenga-300x176.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"176\" \/><\/a><\/strong><strong>GA: <\/strong>\u2018Big Words\u2019 is cool. I play a former member of a rap group. Me, my cousin, who is played by Dorian Missick, and it\u2019s a trio called Domino Poets. We were a 90s hip hop group when we were kids and right before our first album dropped, an incident happened that disbanded the band. The album had a lot of underground fans and it was really going to blow them up, so there\u2019s a lot of resentment because they didn\u2019t become the thing that they wanted to become. Ten years later and we\u2019re all adults and it\u2019s the day of the election of Obama. They are all trying to vote that day but it doesn\u2019t necessarily happen as well as they think it should. They are going to see each other for the first time in years. It\u2019s a really good script. Neil Drummond wrote and directed it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Gbenga-Akinagbe-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload aligncenter size-full wp-image-29657\" title=\"Gbenga Akinagbe 3\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 580 386'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Gbenga-Akinagbe-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"386\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>So, the film is shot already? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>GA:<\/strong> Yes. This past spring and summer, I think I shot, and not including the movie I produced, like four films, between LA and New York. That\u2019s not including the thing I wrote and shot for Sony. I wrote an episode for a new web series for Sony and I happen to be it. We shot that in LA. It\u2019s been a very productive two seasons.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/gina-gershon-peter-stormare-mall-slice.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-29658\" title=\"gina-gershon-peter-stormare-mall-slice\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 150'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/gina-gershon-peter-stormare-mall-slice-300x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s \u2018Home\u2019 and \u2018Mall\u2019 about?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>GA:<\/strong> \u2018Home\u2019 may be the best part and best movie I\u2019ve ever had. I loved it. It\u2019s about a man who is suffering from schizophrenia and he\u2019s in a home for people with psychotic problems. He has a job when he leaves the home. He\u2019s trying to rebuild his life and re-establish a relationship with his son, who he can only see through supervised visits because of his many breakdowns. The script is beautifully written by Donald Oliver. I\u2019m really excited about that. \u2018Mall\u2019 was also done this summer. That came out from nowhere. It\u2019s with Gina Gershon, Vincent D\u2019Onofrio, and James Frecheville, who\u2019s this Australian actor who was in \u2018Animal Kingdom.\u2019 I would describe the film as a \u2018Columbine\u2019 meets \u2018Kids.\u2019 It\u2019s pretty intense.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Gbenga-Akinnagbe.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-29659\" title=\"Gbenga Akinnagbe\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 200 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Gbenga-Akinnagbe-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the project you\u2019re doing with Sony?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>GA:<\/strong> It\u2019s a series called \u2018The Unknown.\u2019 It\u2019s amazing experience. The first season is six episodes. I wrote the second episode. I didn\u2019t write it with me in mind, but I ended up in it. It\u2019s doing very well. It\u2019s like \u2018Twilight Zone\u2019 meets \u2018Tales from the Crypt.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>How are you balancing being a writer and acting? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>GA:<\/strong> It\u2019s funny. I like writing and I enjoy it. It\u2019s painful. You can\u2019t get around the pain of writing. I\u2019m still trying to balance on what I think is my creative habit. It varies, but I do know that I need to continue. It helps me with my acting, and the writing helps me be invested in a different way.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Gbenga-Akinnagbe-on-The-Wire.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-29660\" title=\"Gbenga Akinnagbe on The Wire\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 199'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Gbenga-Akinnagbe-on-The-Wire-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Looking back, what did \u2018The Wire\u2019 do for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>GA: <\/strong>Personally, what the show did for me is limitless. I made so many friends and they will probably friends for the rest of my life. The creators of the show have been amazing to me. A couple of them are my writing mentors. As far as my career, it got the stamp of approval from the Hollywood elite. Although it never won or got nominated for a Best Series awards, the critics and writers knew the show and the actors on it, and they have immense respect for them.
