Nominations for the 28th Film Independent Spirit Awards<\/strong> were announced on Tuesday morning at The W Hollywood by actors Anna Kendrick, Zoe Saldana<\/strong> and Common<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Among the nominees are Middle of Nowhere’s Emayatzy Corinealdi, Lorraine Toussaint<\/strong>, and David Oyelowo<\/strong>, who received nods for Best Female Lead, Best Supporting Female Lead, and Best Supporting Male Lead.<\/p>\n

“Beasts of the Southern Wild,” “Bernie,” ” Moonrise Kingdom,” “Silver Linings Playbook”<\/strong> and “Keep the Lights On” <\/strong>were nominated for top feature.<\/p>\n

<\/strong>“Moonrise” and “Silver Linings” led the way with five noms apiece, followed by “Beasts,” “Middle of Nowhere” and “Keep” with four each.<\/p>\n

The Spirit Awards is open to feature films of at least 70 minutes, provided they have been made for no more than $20 million and played for a week in a commercial theater or been exhibited at one of six notable film festivals.<\/p>\n

Films must also be determined to be independent in the judgment of one of the Film Independent committees that determine nominees. Major studio films can be deemed independent if they are made with \u201ceconomy of means\u201d and deal with \u201coriginal and provocative\u201d subject matter.<\/p>\n

Spirit Awards are given out in the following categories: Best Feature, Best First Feature, Best First Screenplay, Best Director, Best Screenplay, John Cassavetes Award (given to the best feature made for a budget under $500,000), Best Male Lead, Best Female Lead, Best Supporting Male, Best Supporting Female, Best Cinematography, Best International Film, Best Documentary, and the Robert Altman Award. The Filmmaker Grants include the Someone to Watch Award, Stella Artois Truer Than Fiction Award, Piaget Producers Award and the Jameson FIND Your Audience Award.<\/p>\n
