Oscar Isaac talks about writing and singing \u2018Never Had\u2019 from ’10 Years’<\/strong>By Wilson Morales<\/p>\n

While we have seen our sharing of actors singing on the big screen, especially this year with Tom Cruise<\/strong> in \u2018Rock of Ages<\/strong>,\u2019 and Hugh Jackman<\/strong> and Anne Hathaway<\/strong> in the upcoming \u2018Les Miserables<\/strong>,\u2019 it\u2019s rare to see an actor who can, not only sing, but write his own song<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s where actor Oscar Isaac<\/strong> beats them all. In less than three years, Isaac has skyrocketed to the top of the Hollywood food chain with roles in \u2018Robin Hood<\/strong>\u2019 opposite Russell Crowe<\/strong>, \u2018Sucker Punch<\/strong>\u2019 Madonna<\/strong>\u2019s \u2018W.E<\/strong>.\u2019, \u2018Drive<\/strong>\u2019 with Ryan Gosling<\/strong>, and this year\u2019s \u2018For Greater Glory,\u2019 \u2018The Bourne Legacy,\u2019 \u2018Won\u2019t Back Down,\u2019<\/strong> and \u201910 Years,\u2019<\/strong> which features a bevy of talent (Channing Tatum<\/strong>, his wife Jenna Dewan-Tatum , Chris Pratt, Max Minghella, Justin Long, Ari Graynor, Aubrey Plaza, Anthony Mackie, Kate Mara, Lynn Collins, Rosario Dawson, Brian Geraghty, Scott Porter<\/strong>, and Aaron Yoo<\/strong>)<\/p>\n

It\u2019s in that film, where Isaac was able to showcase his skills as a songwriter-singer. Most people weren\u2019t aware that this Julliard grad can sing, play the guitar, and was once in a band called “The Blinking Underdogs.\u201d<\/p>\n

During a scene in \u201910 Years,\u2019 <\/strong>which is about a group of friends coming back for a high school reunion, Isaac\u2019s character Reeves, who went on to become a successful recording artist, plays the song that got him famous.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u2018Never Had,\u2019 <\/strong>which was written and sang by Isaac, is meant to describe Reeves\u2019 relationship with Kate Mara’s character. It is one of 104 songs that\u2019s in contention for an Oscar nomination.<\/p>\n

Blackfilm.com <\/strong>recently spoke with Isaac about writing that song for the film.<\/p>\n

How did you end up writing and singing a song for the film?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Oscar Isaac: <\/strong>Jamie Linden (the director) offered me the role in the film of this musician who comes back and plays a song for his high school sweetheart. As I was preparing it, he was sending me different ideas for the song. That was a great challenge for me because I have been writing music since I was a teenage, since I was 14. I had to come up with a song that would work. So, I contacted my buddy Alan Doyle and the both of us got to work and came up with this song. I gave it to Jamie and he loved it, and decided that it would be the song.<\/p>\n

Prior to that, had you done any singing in films?<\/strong><\/p>\n

OI: <\/strong>Well, in \u2018Sucker Punch,\u2019 there was this long scene where me and Carla Gugino sang \u2018Love is a Drug,\u2019 and that was my first time getting on a soundtrack.<\/p>\n
