{"id":64374,"date":"2012-12-14T00:40:23","date_gmt":"2012-12-14T00:40:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/0de2709a84.nxcli.net\/0-kjasnb\/2012\/12\/14\/rising-starlet-note-to-selfs-layla-crawford\/"},"modified":"2018-12-18T09:52:03","modified_gmt":"2018-12-18T09:52:03","slug":"rising-starlet-note-to-selfs-layla-crawford","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/rising-starlet-note-to-selfs-layla-crawford\/","title":{"rendered":"Rising Starlet: Note to Self\u2019s Layla Crawford"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Rising Starlet: Note to Self\u2019s Layla Crawford<\/strong>By Wilson Morales<\/p>\n<p>December 14, 2012<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Layla-Crawford.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-32709\" title=\"Layla Crawford\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 240 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Layla-Crawford-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While <strong>Quvenzhan\u00e9 Wallis<\/strong>, who plays a character called Hushpuppy in the critical acclaimed film, <strong>Beasts of the Southern Wild<\/strong>, has been blossoming on the big screen, there\u2019s another young starlet who\u2019s doing it on both film and TV.<\/p>\n<p>Most recently at the Hollywood Black Film Festival, the opening night film was <strong>\u2018Note to Self,\u2019 <\/strong>which starred C<strong>hristian Keyes, LeToya Lucket, Brely Evans<\/strong>, and 8 year-old <strong>Layla Crawford<\/strong>, who seemed to capture the hearts of many with her performance as Katrina Whittaker, daughter of Letoya Luckett&#8217;s character.<\/p>\n<p>Besides making her film debut in \u2018Self,\u2019 Crawford can also be seen a series regular on the first-run syndicated comedy, <strong>The First Family,<\/strong> created and produced by Byron Allen and Entertainment Studios.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Layla-Crawford-Note-to-Self.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-32710\" title=\"Layla Crawford Note to Self\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 225 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Layla-Crawford-Note-to-Self-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Featuring an all star cast that includes <strong>Marla Gibbs, Jackee Harry, John Witherspoon<\/strong>, and the legendary <strong>Gladys Knight<\/strong>, Crawford plays Olivia Johnson, the President\u2019s youngest daughter. Last month, Layla played the daughter to <strong>LL Cool<\/strong>\u2019s character on CBS\u2019 hit series, <strong>NCIS: Los Angeles<\/strong>. Layla also worked with director <strong>Catherine Hardwicke<\/strong> (Twilight; Thirteen) as a young Rosa Parks in a PSA commercial for the National Women\u2019s History Museum alongside four-time Emmy Award-nominee Alfred Woodard. She will be next seen in a guest starring role on the Christmas episode of CBS\u2019 &#8220;<strong>Two and a Half Men<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Blackfilm.com recently spoke with Crawford on her recent work in films and television and what she has coming up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s your role in \u2018Note to Self\u2019?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Layla Crawford:<\/strong> I&#8217;m the daughter of Paula Whitaker, who is played by LeToya Luckett. It was really fun.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Layla-Crawford-The-First-Family.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-32711\" title=\"Layla Crawford The First Family\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 225'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Layla-Crawford-The-First-Family-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>How was working with LeToya?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>LC:<\/strong> It was fun. She&#8217;s actually my cousin. We had a lot of fun doing jokes. Christian is the main character and the writer of the story.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What can you say about The First Family?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>LC:<\/strong> The First Family is a comedy show about the African American president in the White House but we&#8217;re called The Johnsons. The president&#8217;s name is William Johnson and he&#8217;s the second African American president. There are four children and I play his youngest daughter, Olivia. Right now we&#8217;re on hiatus for the holidays. We already filmed 11 episodes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Layla-Crawford-and-LL-Cool-J.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-32712\" title=\"Layla Crawford and LL Cool J\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Layla-Crawford-and-LL-Cool-J-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>You&#8217;re also playing LL Cool J&#8217;s daughter on &#8220;NCIS: LA.&#8221; How was working on that show?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>LC:<\/strong> It was so cool and LL Cool J is so nice. He&#8217;s also been like a real dad on set. I&#8217;d worked as his daughter on two episodes and each time it has been amazing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s easier to do, TV or film?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>LC:<\/strong> I like them both. It&#8217;s hard to choose just one.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you get into acting? Was this something you wanted to do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>LC: <\/strong>When I was in kindergarten, I tried out for a play and I got the part. I was so excited. My assistant principal was the writer and director of the play. She inspired me to continued acting. It was a wonderful experience. She gave me an autographed book of a movie she produced and the Twilight soundtrack. That was really fun.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When you&#8217;re not acting, what do you on your spare time? Are you still in school?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>LC:<\/strong> I&#8217;m home schooled. I like to play with family and friends. I hang with my little brother. He has a little tent inside the house so we pretend that we&#8217;re camping. I also like to play with my American Girl dolls. I pretend I&#8217;m a teacher and they are my students. It&#8217;s lots of fun. I also play soccer. I&#8217;m on a team.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nWhat do you want for Christmas? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>LC: <\/strong>I don&#8217;t want anything. I have a lot of toys.
