The Foundation for the Advancement of African-Americans in Film<\/strong> (FAAAF) announced its nominees for the 13th Annual Black Reel Awards<\/strong>, Wednesday, catapulting a diverse group of films into the spotlight for Outstanding Motion Picture. The nominees for the top prize are Beasts of the Southern Wild<\/em>, Django Unchained<\/em>, Flight<\/em>, The Intouchables<\/em><\/strong> and Middle of Nowhere<\/strong>, <\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is one of the most eclectic groups of films we\u2019ve seen in a very long time,\u201d said Tim Gordon<\/strong>, president of the Black Reel Awards. \u201cIt was a really competitive year for Black films and our slate of nominees demonstrates that fact, from a mainstream studio pic in Flight<\/em> to an edgy Tarantino Blaxploitation Western, to the tiny independent film that could in Beasts of the Southern Wild<\/em>, the African-American vehicle Middle of Nowhere<\/em>, and the French The Intouchables. <\/em>It\u2019s been a long time since a foreign film has cracked this list.\u201d<\/p>\n

The acting nominations largely reflected the popularity of the Outstanding Motion Picture category, with a few exceptions. Outstanding Actor nods went to Jamie Foxx<\/strong> for his portrayal of a vengeful slave in Django Unchained;<\/em> Nate Parker<\/strong> for Red Tails<\/em>, about the heroics of the all black Tuskegee Airmen; comedian Chris Rock<\/strong> for the romantic comedy 2 Days in New York<\/em>; Omar Sy<\/strong> for the French comedy drama The Intouchables<\/em>; and returning favorite Denzel Washington<\/strong> for his role as a pilot wrestling with addiction in Flight<\/em>. Familiar face Halle Berry<\/strong> was nominated in the Outstanding Actress category for her multi-role portrayals in the mind-bending Cloud Atlas<\/em>; Emayatzy Corinealdi f<\/strong>or the journey of personal discovery, Middle of Nowhere<\/em>; Viola Davis<\/strong> for the inspirational education drama Won\u2019t Back Down<\/em>; Rashida Jones<\/strong> for the divorce comedy Celeste and Jesse Forever<\/em>; and Quvenzhane Wallis<\/strong> for her stunning turn as a young girl trying to take care of herself and her ailing father in the Louisiana bayou, in Beasts of the Southern Wild<\/em>. Wallis joins Sy in also being nominated for Best Breakthrough Performance.<\/p>\n

Outstanding Supporting Actor nominations include Mike Epps<\/strong> for the Jordan Sparks musical, Sparkle<\/em>; Dwight Henry<\/strong> (Beasts of the Southern Wild<\/em>); Samuel L. Jackson<\/strong> (Django Unchained<\/em>); David Oyelowo<\/strong> (Middle of Nowhere<\/em>); and Nate Parker<\/strong> for the economic thriller, Arbitrage<\/em>. Outstanding Supporting Actress nominations went to Naomie Harris<\/strong> for the James Bond action fest, Skyfall<\/em>; Lorraine Toussaint<\/strong> (Middle of Nowhere<\/em>); Tamara Tunie<\/strong> (Flight<\/em>); Kerry Washington<\/strong> (Django Unchained<\/em>); and\u00a0 Octavia Spencer f<\/strong>or the comedy-drama, Smashed<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Outstanding Director nods went to Salim Akil<\/strong> for Sparkle<\/em>, Ava DuVernay<\/strong> for Middle of Nowhere,<\/em> Spike Lee<\/strong> for Red Hook Summer<\/em>, Peter Ramsey<\/strong> for the animated Rise of the Guardians<\/em> and Tim Story <\/strong>for Think Like a Man<\/em>. Spike Lee was also nominated for Bad 25<\/em><\/strong> in the Outstanding Feature Documentary category, which also included The Central Park Five<\/strong><\/em>, Marley,<\/em> Searching for Sugar Man<\/em><\/strong>, and Brooklyn Castle<\/em><\/strong>, about inner city high school chess competitions.<\/p>\n

The Black Reel Awards also pays tribute to the very best in African American television. The nominees for Outstanding TV Movie or Mini-Series went to A Beautiful Soul, Let it Shine, Raising Izzie<\/strong> <\/em>(five nominations in all), Somebody\u2019s Child<\/strong><\/em> and Steel Magnolias<\/em><\/strong>, the most lauded television series with seven nominations. Outstanding Actors and Actresses included Rockmond Dunbar, Cuba Gooding Jr., Trevor Jackson, Sean Patrick Thomas, Michael Jai White<\/strong> as well as Aunjanue Ellis, Queen Latifah, Keke Palmer, Vanessa A. Williams<\/strong> and Lynn Whitfield<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Black Reel Awards, comprised of more than 30 voters across the country, annually select and spotlight films and performances featuring African-Americans, as well as people of color throughout the African Diaspora.<\/p>\n

The 13th Annual Black Reel Awards winners will be announced on Blog Talk Radio, Thursday, February 7, 2013, in Washington, DC.<\/strong><\/p>\n
