The nominees for the top prize are <strong><em>Beasts of the Southern Wild<\/em>, <em>Django Unchained<\/em>, <em>Flight<\/em>, <em>The Intouchables<\/em><\/strong> and <em><strong>Middle of Nowhere<\/strong>, <\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is one of the most eclectic groups of films we\u2019ve seen in a  very long time,\u201d said <strong>Tim Gordon<\/strong>, president of the Black Reel Awards.  \u201cIt was a really competitive year for Black films and our slate of  nominees demonstrates that fact, from a mainstream studio pic in <em>Flight<\/em> to an edgy Tarantino Blaxploitation Western, to the tiny independent film that could in <em>Beasts of the Southern Wild<\/em>, the African-American vehicle <em>Middle of Nowhere<\/em>, and the French <em>The Intouchables. <\/em>It\u2019s been a long time since a foreign film has cracked this list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Middle-of-Nowhere-poster-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-28940\" title=\"Middle of Nowhere poster 2\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 199 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Middle-of-Nowhere-poster-2-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The acting nominations largely reflected the popularity of the  Outstanding Motion Picture category, with a few exceptions. Outstanding  Actor nods went to <strong>Jamie Foxx<\/strong> for his portrayal of a vengeful slave in <em>Django Unchained;<\/em> <strong>Nate Parker<\/strong> for <em>Red Tails<\/em>, about the heroics of the all black Tuskegee Airmen; comedian <strong>Chris Rock<\/strong> for the romantic comedy <em>2 Days in New York<\/em>; <strong>Omar Sy<\/strong> for the French comedy drama <em>The Intouchables<\/em>; and returning favorite <strong>Denzel Washington<\/strong> for his role as a pilot wrestling with addiction in <em>Flight<\/em>. Familiar face <strong>Halle Berry<\/strong> was nominated in the Outstanding Actress category for her multi-role portrayals in the mind-bending <em>Cloud Atlas<\/em>; <strong>Emayatzy Corinealdi f<\/strong>or the journey of personal discovery, <em>Middle of Nowhere<\/em>; <strong>Viola Davis<\/strong> for the inspirational education drama <em>Won\u2019t Back Down<\/em>; <strong>Rashida Jones<\/strong> for the divorce comedy <em>Celeste and Jesse Forever<\/em>;  and <strong>Quvenzhane Wallis<\/strong> for her stunning turn as a young girl trying to  take care of herself and her ailing father in the Louisiana bayou, in <em>Beasts of the Southern Wild<\/em>. Wallis joins Sy in also being nominated for Best Breakthrough Performance.<\/p>\n<p>Outstanding Supporting Actor nominations include <strong>Mike Epps<\/strong> for the Jordan Sparks musical, <em>Sparkle<\/em>;<strong> Dwight Henry<\/strong> (<em>Beasts of the Southern Wild<\/em>); <strong>Samuel L. Jackson<\/strong> (<em>Django Unchained<\/em>); <strong>David Oyelowo<\/strong> (<em>Middle of Nowhere<\/em>); and <strong>Nate Parker<\/strong> for the economic thriller, <em>Arbitrage<\/em>. Spike Lee was also nominated for <strong><em>Bad 25<\/em><\/strong> in the Outstanding Feature Documentary category, which also included <em>T<strong>he Central Park Five<\/strong><\/em><strong>, <em>Marley,<\/em> <em>Searching for Sugar Man<\/em><\/strong>, and <strong><em>Brooklyn Castle<\/em><\/strong>, about inner city high school chess competitions.<\/p>\n<p>The Black Reel Awards also pays tribute to the very best in African  American television. The nominees for Outstanding TV Movie or  Mini-Series went to <em><strong>A Beautiful Soul, Let it Shine, Raising Izzie<\/strong> <\/em>(five nominations in all)<em>, <strong>Somebody\u2019s Child<\/strong><\/em> and <strong><em>Steel Magnolias<\/em><\/strong>,  the most lauded television series with seven nominations. Outstanding  Actors and Actresses included <strong>Rockmond Dunbar, Cuba Gooding Jr., Trevor  Jackson, Sean Patrick Thomas, Michael Jai White<\/strong> as well as <strong>Aunjanue  Ellis, Queen Latifah, Keke Palmer, Vanessa A.
