New York, NY (December 19, 2012) \u2013The Black Film Critics Circle<\/strong> (BFCC) has voted \u201cZERO DARK THIRTY<\/strong>\u201d Best Film of 2012<\/strong>, Kathryn Bigelow<\/strong> Best Director for \u201cZERO DARK THIRTY\u201d, Jessica Chastain<\/strong> Best Actress for \u201cZERO DARK THIRTY\u201d, Daniel Day-Lewis<\/strong> Best Actor for LINCOLN and Christoph Waltz <\/strong>Best Supporting Actor for \u201cDJANGO UNCHAINED\u201d. The announcement was made today by Mike Sargent<\/strong>, co-president, BFCC. Votes were cast and tabulated in NY at the organization\u2019s annual meeting on December 18, 2012.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Recognizing achievements in theatrical motion pictures, the BFCC awarded prizes in 13 categories including best picture, best director, original and adapted screenplay, best actor, best actress, best supporting actor, best supporting actress, best animated feature, best independent film, best documentary feature, best foreign film and best ensemble. Special Signature awards are also given to industry pioneers and rising stars.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis year was a very interesting mix,\u201d says Sargent. \u201c A number of films, though some not commercially successful addressed perspectives and issues seldom given light. Making our Special mention category more important this year than ever before.\u201d \u201cIn the main categories, we chose the films that we felt most resonated and illustrated the continued ability of Hollywood to entertain, and move audiences. Congratulations to all of the winners.\u201d<\/p>\n

PIONEER \u2013 <\/strong>WILL PACKER<\/strong>
\nThis year’s Pioneer Award is given to producer Will Packer of Rainforest Films. While he’s been around Hollywood for some time now, having successful put together a handful of box office hits, including ‘Stomp The Yard,’ ‘This Christmas,’ ‘Obsessed,’ and ‘Takers.’ This year, his latest ‘Think Like A Man,’ not only opened #1 at box office, defying expectations, but went on to gross a total of nearly $100 million. It must be noted the production budget was less than $15 million. The St. Petersburg, FL native also started a broadcast network, BOUNCE TV, which continues to build an audience among African American households. Will has continued to expand the boundaries of what black filmmakers can achieve and embody the very essence of the word Pioneer.<\/p>\n

Founded in 2010, the Black Film Critics Circle is a membership organization comprised of film critics of color from daily newspapers, weekly newspapers, magazines, radio, television and qualifying on-line publications. The organization is dedicated to honoring excellence of professionals in the theatrical motion picture industry in U.S. and World Cinema. Its mission is to celebrate contributions and achievements in film by people of the black Diaspora who work in front of and behind the camera, maintain the integrity of a true Critics organization and advance a collective vision of journalists of the black Diaspora. BFCC assists in the development of new talent in the field of entertainment journalism through educational opportunities, mentoring and strategic partnerships and raises awareness of the significance of black film and black film history as a critical part of film culture and preservation.
