Sony Pictures is setting Will Gluck<\/strong> to helm Annie<\/strong>, the re-imagining of the Broadway musical. The helmer who directed Easy A<\/strong> and Friends With Benefits<\/strong> for Sony-based Screen Gems, takes on a high profile project that will be produced by James Lassiter, Jada Pinkett Smith<\/strong>, and Will Smith<\/strong> through their Overbrook Entertainment banner, and by Shawn \u201cJay Z\u201d Carter, Jay Brown<\/strong>, and Tyran \u201cTy Ty\u201d Smith<\/strong> through Marcy Media.<\/p>\n

Willow Smith is no longer attached; she was nine when development began and she has outgrown the role of Annie.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gluck will revise the film\u2019s screenplay, which was written by Emma Thompson<\/strong> and rewritten by Aline Brosh McKenna<\/strong> based on the musical and its book by Thomas Meehan<\/strong>, music by Charles Strouse<\/strong>, lyrics by Martin Charnin<\/strong>. That\u2019s based on the Little Orphan Annie<\/strong> comic strip. The movie is contemporized and will shoot in the fall for a 2014 release.<\/p>\n

Commenting on the announcement, Sony\u2019s Doug Belgrad and Hannah Minghella said, \u201cAfter seeing firsthand his work on several films for Sony, including Easy A and Friends with Benefits, we\u2019re huge fans of Will Gluck. At the helm of Annie, he will bring to this film all the charm of the original Broadway production while also appealing to a new generation.\u201d<\/p>\n

JAY Z<\/strong>, who previously sampled the classic Annie song It\u2019s the Hard Knock Life in Hard Knock Life<\/strong> (Ghetto Anthem), stated, \u201cFor Marcy Media\u2019s first foray into film, we couldn\u2019t ask for better partners and mentors than Overbrook Entertainment. We are excited to work with Will Gluck and Sony Pictures Entertainment. My well-known affinity for the classic \u2018Hard Knock Life\u2019 makes Annie a natural vehicle to lead us into the world of the cinema.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pic is the first from Overbrook\u2019s feature partnership with Carter, a union that also included the Broadway hit Fela!<\/p>\n
