Jessica Lucas talks Evil Dead<\/a><\/strong>By Wilson Morales<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Coming to theaters this weekend is the much anticipated remake of the cult classic horror film, \u2018Evil Dead<\/a><\/strong>.\u2019 Directed by Fede Alvarez<\/strong>, with Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell<\/strong> as producers, the film stars Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas<\/strong>, and Elizabeth Blackmore<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.<\/p>\n

For Lucas, who plays Olivia, it\u2019s a chance to be seen again on the big screen. Although the Canadian actress has been seen in other films such as \u2018She\u2019s The One,\u2019 \u2018The Covenant,\u2019<\/strong> and J.J. Abrams\u2019 \u2018Cloverfield,\u2019<\/strong> Lucas has been featured in several TV series such as \u2018Edgemont<\/strong>,\u2019 the rebooted \u2018Melrose Place,\u2019 \u2018Friends with Benefits,\u2019 <\/strong>and more recently her current TV show \u2018Cult.\u2019 <\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/strong>In speaking with Blackfilm.com, Lucas talks about doing a remake, her character, and working with her cast on this film.<\/p>\n

When you signed up for the film, were you aware as to how gory the film would be?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jessica Lucas: <\/strong>Yes. I had a pretty good idea in reading the script that it was going to be gory. I was surprised that we didn\u2019t used a lot of CGI on the set so the amount of blood we used was quite alarming and I think it translates on the screen very well.<\/p>\n

What were your initial thoughts when asked to be part of a remake?<\/strong><\/p>\n

JL:<\/strong> I think initially I had some trepidations going in because remaking an iconic film is a scary thing to do and why do it? But because it had Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi attached, and it makes it a lot less apprehensive and knowing that they just wanted to make a great film. It wasn\u2019t going to be a copy of the original but was trying to do its own thing, and that\u2019s what made it okay. I\u2019m just so honored to be a part of the franchise.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

How would you describe your character Olivia? <\/strong><\/p>\n

JL: <\/strong>Olivia is a nurse and is part of a group of friends who grew up together in Michigan. They go to the cabin in the woods to help their friend kick her addiction to heroin. She\u2019s the realist of the group. She\u2019s very skeptical of what\u2019s happening and meets her demise first. It was well deserved considering she\u2019s the one that ends up dooming them all.<\/p>\n

When ever you see a horror film, death is inevitable. So, why should we care for any of the characters?<\/strong><\/p>\n

JL: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019s the hope. There\u2019s some back-story there to entice viewers to care when some of the characters die, but I don\u2019t think people go see these movies necessarily. It\u2019s a horror film. It\u2019s a slasher flick and sort of an action film. As each death has its own iconic thing, then I don\u2019t know if you need to care about the characters so much. It\u2019s a ride.<\/p>\n

Have you always been a fan of the horror genre?<\/strong><\/p>\n

JL: <\/strong>I love horror films. I\u2019m a huge fan of them. I grew up on them. When I was a kid, I would watch them with my friends. It\u2019s crazy to be a part of one.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Have you done anything close to this?<\/strong><\/p>\n

JL:<\/strong> I\u2019ve never had it this crazy. I did a film called \u2018Amusement\u2019 that didn\u2019t get released. It that film, I had to have some prosthetics done on me, but it was nothing like this level. Every day I was covered in vomit, blood and guts. It was uncomfortable, but it looks really great.<\/p>\n

What do you think makes a horror film successful, especially if it\u2019s a remake?<\/strong><\/p>\n

JL:<\/strong> It\u2019s hard to top it because it does seem like everything has been done. I think our movie uses a lot of those stereotype and clich\u00e9s, and I think visually, it\u2019s so cool. It\u2019s very dark and gritty and beautifully shot. There\u2019s so much CGI in the market these days that with our film, you can\u2019t figure out what scene it\u2019s in. The blood looks so real and there\u2019s so much of it that it\u2019s alarming.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

How was working with the rest of the cast?<\/strong><\/p>\n

JL:<\/strong> We spent a couple of weeks before rehearsals and we went on a trip together in New Zealand and did some bonding there. It was really great. We were so far away from home and being in New Zealand, it\u2019s hard to talk to anyone else but each other. We relied on each other heavily, and I felt much supported by everybody. I really genuinely like everyone in the cast. It made it easy.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Between this and your TV work, how do you find time to do both?<\/strong><\/p>\n

JL: <\/strong>I guess I\u2019ve been lucky to be able to do both. Timing wise, things seemed to crop up at the right moment. When I\u2019ve had downtime from doing TV shows, I have time to do a film, and I hope to be able to continue to do both. I don\u2019t want to do just one or the other. I enjoy doing each for different reasons.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s next?<\/strong><\/p>\n

JL: <\/strong>I just did a romantic comedy called \u2018Are We Officially Dating?\u2019 with Zac Efron and Miles Teller and Michael B. Jordan. It\u2019s about three guys who make a vow to stay single after they\u2019ve all been through bad breakups and I play Michael B. Jordan\u2019s ex-wife. That\u2019s a lighthearted film and was perfect to do after filming the TV series \u2018Cult,\u2019 which is a supernatural mystery, and \u2018Evil Dead,\u2019 which is a crazy, horror, slasher movie. I just wanted to challenge myself in doing many different things as possible.<\/p>\n
