Ryan Coogler<\/strong>‘s Sundance Award-winning film, which is now titled ‘Fruitvale Station<\/strong>‘ is headed to the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. Also playing at the fest is Stephen Frear<\/strong>‘s HBO film, ‘Muhammad Ali\u2019s Greatest Fight<\/strong>,’ which explores Ali’s biggest match, his fight with the US government. Cannes will close with Jerome Salle’s Thriller ‘Zulu<\/strong>,’ starring Forest Whitaker<\/strong> and Orlando Bloom<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Heralding a strong year for American auteurs on the Croisette, Palme d\u2019Or laureates Steven Soderbergh<\/strong> and Joel and Ethan Coen<\/strong> will square off with Alexander Payne<\/strong> and James Gray<\/strong> at the 66th Cannes Film Festival, as fest delegate general Thierry Fremaux and president Gilles Jacob announced a starry slate of U.S. and English-language fare at a Paris press conference on Thursday.<\/p>\n

In light of earlier announcements that Baz Luhrmann\u2019s \u201cThe Great Gatsby<\/strong>\u201d would open the festival on May 15 and that Steven Spielberg would serve as president of the jury, the strong Hollywood presence in this year\u2019s lineup comes as little surprise.<\/p>\n

The Coen brothers, previously in competition with 2007\u2019s \u201cNo Country for Old Men,\u201d will make a return appearance with \u201cInside Llewyn Davis,\u201d a look at New York\u2019s \u201960s folk-music scene starring Carey Mulligan and Justin Timberlake. Payne, last in Cannes with \u201cAbout Schmidt,\u201d will return with another road-trip comedy, \u201cNebraska,\u201d starring Bruce Dern and Will Forte and set in the writer-director\u2019s native Omaha. Jeremy Renner, Joaquin Phoenix and Marion Cotillard star in Gray\u2019s 1920s-set drama \u201cThe Immigrant,\u201d which previously went by the titles \u201cLowlife\u201d and \u201cNightingale.\u201d<\/p>\n

Soderbergh, who recently competed for Berlin\u2019s Golden Bear with his final theatrical film, \u201cSide Effects,\u201d will get another sendoff on the Croisette with his made-for-HBO miniseries \u201cBehind the Candelabra,\u201d starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon as Liberace and his younger lover, Scott Thorson, respectively. Although Olivier Assayas\u2019 six-hour telepic \u201cCarlos\u201d was barred from competing at the festival in 2010, there\u2019s a precedent for HBO fare screening in competition, as \u201cThe Life and Death of Peter Sellers\u201d did just that in 2004.<\/p>\n

Fremaux said that while Soderbergh had initially wanted to present \u201cCandelabra\u201d out of competition, the fest topper had begged the director via email to \u201csay yes\u201d to a competition slot, and Soderbergh agreed.<\/p>\n

Nicolas Winding Refn\u2019s anticipated follow-up to Cannes-preeming \u201cDrive,\u201d \u201cOnly God Forgives,\u201d starring Ryan Gosling as a British gangster hiding in Bangkok\u2019s criminal underworld, was co-financed and co-produced by two Paris-based powerhouses, Wild Bunch and Gaumont, which share international sales. Other notable Gallic contenders include a duo of sultry Wild Bunch titles: Francois Ozon\u2019s \u201cJeune et jolie,\u201d about an upper-class teenage girl who prostitutes herself; and Abdellatif Kechiche\u2019s coming-of-age drama \u201cLa Vie d\u2019Adele,\u201d toplining Lea Seydoux.<\/p>\n

The English-language debut of French helmer Guillaume Canet, \u201cBlood Ties<\/strong>,\u201d will play out of competition, along with J.C. Chandor\u2019s \u201cAll Is Lost<\/strong>,\u201d toplining Robert Redford<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Un Certain Regard selection, which has gained a higher profile under Fremaux\u2019s leadership, will open with Sofia Coppola<\/strong>\u2019s glitzy L.A.-set crime\/drama \u201cThe Bling Ring<\/strong>,\u201d as previously announced. The program will also play Rebecca Zlotowski<\/strong>\u2019s sophomore pic \u201cGrand Central<\/strong>,\u201d starring Tahar Rahim<\/strong> and Lea Seydoux<\/strong>; James Franco<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cAs I Lay Dying<\/strong>;\u201d Claire Denis<\/strong>\u2019 \u201cThe Bastards<\/strong>\u201d; and recent Sundance prizewinner \u201cFruitvale Station<\/strong>,\u201d from Ryan Coogler<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
