\"\"<\/a>Nominations for the 67th annual Tony Awards came out this morning and among the nominees was the revival of Horton Foote’s classic play, The Trip to Bountiful<\/strong>, and its star, the legendary Cicely Tyso<\/strong>n for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play.<\/p>\n

Also nominated was her castmate Condola Rashad<\/strong> for Best Featured Actress in a Play. It’s her second consecutive nomination in the category following last year’s nod for ‘Stickfly.’ She will be competing with Shalita Grant<\/strong>, who got a nod for her role in Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.<\/p>\n

Courtney B. Vance<\/strong> received his first nod for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his role in The Lucky Guy as did George C. Wolfe<\/strong> for his direction of the play.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In the musical categories, Billy Porter<\/strong> received a nomination for BestActor in a Musical for his amazing performance in Kinky Boots. Valisia LeKae<\/strong> from Motown the Musical and Patina Miller<\/strong> from Pippin will be competing against each other in the category for Best Performance by an Actress in a Musical. Charl Brown<\/strong>, who plays the legendary Smokey Robinson in Motown the Musical, received a nod for Best Featured Actor in a Musical.<\/p>\n

“My fianc\u00e9 came and woke me up and told me. He said “Well, we’re going to the Tony Awards<\/a>!”. And then my manager called me right after. This means everything. From the creative team to cast and crew, we all put our hearts and souls into reinventing the show and telling it our way, and it feels so great to be a part of it. It’s so amazing. I’m going to get a vocal massage today and then work out and then I’ll have a celebratory lunch with my manager- and then of course the show tonight! We are having the time of our live and the reception has been so great, and now it will continue. This is just something extra.”<\/p>\n

\n“I was asleep this morning and my mom called, I found out the typical way. I’ve gotten a lot of emails and calls already and it was amazing and wonderful. I’m very much ready for the rest of the journey. Being in a show is emotionally and physically tasking and nominations are wonderful- but at the end of the day I know that I did what we set out to do- bringing George C. Wolfe’s amazing vision to life. This is just the icing on the cake. Today I’ll be on the phone with my mom, everyone is still asleep right now! I’m sure we’ll be celebrating tonight at the show with the producers.”<\/p>\n

Valisia Lekae<\/a>, Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical (playing “Diana Ross”), Motown<\/em>:<\/strong> I was snuggled in my bed, with my heating pad on, and I didn’t want to watch it, and we couldn’t get the computer to work, and my phone hasn’t been working properly. I knew that if anything were to happen, my agent was going to call me, so by 8:35 AM, I hadn’t heard anything. I just looked at my phone, and it had seven or eight phone calls on it, and finally my agent got through, and he told me the news. I was screaming, and I kept saying to him, “Are you sure? Are you really<\/em> sure they said my name?” And then I said, “Did they pronounce it correctly?” And, he said, “They were close, but they really didn’t get it right.” I said, “That’s okay. I had never been so happy about my name being mispronounced ever in my life.” But this was the moment, so that’s how I found out. It really, really means a lot because it feels like my 10,000 hours [of work] have paid off. I didn’t go to school for performing arts, and I didn’t go to college for theatre or drama, and the years spent on Broadway have literally served for me as a conservatory \u2014 learning from the best like Audra McDonald<\/a> and Alan Cumming<\/a> and Ana Gasteyer. So I really feel like all those years of watching them and listening have paid off now that I get to step into my own leading-lady role! [Laughs.] It’s really kind of funny just to even say it, but I feel so honored about it. I really, really do.<\/p>\n

[Laughs.] It was utter joy to say the least. I don’t think I ran, I think I flew off the couch, running around my tiny apartment, crying actually. I started doing theatre when I was a teenager. I went to a performing arts school in San Diego, and so the Tonys and Broadway have always been this big, seemingly unattainable, dream of mine. And now, to be on my third Broadway show, and my first leading role on Broadway, and to get nominated for a Tony, it means the absolute world to me. It truly does.<\/p>\n

I’m so thrilled for everyone involved, because it’s really hard work putting on a show and you become a family and it’s nice to have the whole family recognized. I’m so thrilled for my co-star Stark, because I wouldn’t be able to Lola without him and it’s amazing. I’m celebrating by sleeping and getting ready to go into this twirl wind of activity. I need to sleep enough so I can do 8 shows a week.”<\/p>\n

Shalita Grant, BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A FEATURED ROLE IN A PLAY for VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>“I was asleep and my publicist called me. We went to the Actors Fund gala last night and I went out afterwards. She told me that if I got a personal nomination she would call me, and if the show did that she would just email me. I got in at 3am and went to bed and got a call from her so early, and I answered the phone and she was loosing her mind! She said, “Wake up! You’re a Tony nominee!” I’m alive and feeling good and today I will be glued to my couch talking to people about how I feel. I’m gonna go to Kitchenette for lunch, which is one of my favorite places, to get fried chicken and mac and cheese. My favorite!”
