Charlie Hunnam<\/strong> will star as Christian Grey, the lead male character in Universal Pictures and Focus Features\u2019 highly anticipated film adaptation of \u201cFifty Shades of Grey,\u201d it was announced today. He joins Dakota Johnson<\/strong>, who will star opposite him as Anastasia Steele.<\/p>\n

The film, which will be released by Focus Features on August 1, 2014 in North America, is being directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson<\/strong> and produced by Michael De Luca<\/strong> and Dana Brunetti<\/strong> alongside E L James<\/strong>, the author of the #1 bestselling book on which the film is based. The screenplay is by Kelly Marcel<\/strong>. The announcement about Mr. Hunnam\u2019s casting in Fifty Shades of Grey was made today by Ms. James.<\/p>\n

Mr. Hunnam currently stars as a regular on the critically acclaimed FX series Sons of Anarchy<\/strong>. His feature film credits include Pacific Rim, Children of Men, Cold Mountain<\/strong>, and Nicholas Nickleby<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Johnson’s first notable screen role was in the multi-Academy Award-winning 2010 feature The Social Network<\/strong>, on which De Luca and Brunetti were producers. Her subsequent movies include the upcoming feature Need for Speed, 21 Jump Street<\/strong>, and Universal Pictures’ The Five-Year Engagement<\/strong>. She also starred as Kate in the Fox Network comedy series “Ben and Kate<\/strong>,” which aired during the 2012-2013 season. Johnson is currently shooting the feature film Cymbeline.<\/p>\n

She is the daughter of actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Fifty Shades of Grey follows the relationship of 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey and college student Anastasia Steele. Grey has a dark past who favors S&M relationships. His loyalty to the dominant-submissive subset is tested when he meets the young college graduate Anastasia Steele, who seems like the perfect girl for him. Subsequent novels in the series, “Fifty Shades Darker” and “Fifty Shades Freed,” explore the couple’s deepening relationship.<\/p>\n

\u201cFifty Shades of Grey\u201d has become a global phenomenon and the trilogy has been translated in 50 languages worldwide since its release.
