While the Compton native didn&#8217;t release a feature film in 2013, she managed to rack up an impressive line of work and achieved some accolades along the way.<\/p>\n<p>From film to TV, from Sundance to the Academy, the former-publicist-turned-director kept herself busy while also releasing two feature films through her independent label, AFFRM.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/The-Door-director-Ava-DuVernay-Gabrielle-Union-Alfre-Woodard-Goapele-Emayatzy-Corinealdi-and-Adepero-Oduye.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-35088\" title=\"The Door - director Ava DuVernay, Gabrielle Union, Alfre Woodard, Goapele, Emayatzy Corinealdi, and Adepero Oduye\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 274'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/The-Door-director-Ava-DuVernay-Gabrielle-Union-Alfre-Woodard-Goapele-Emayatzy-Corinealdi-and-Adepero-Oduye-300x274.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"274\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With her 2012 film <strong>Middle of Nowhere<\/strong> still making its tour around the world,  DuVernay concentrated on smaller projects, beginning with the short film, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2013\/02\/first-look-at-ava-duvernay-short-the-door\/\">The Door<\/a><\/strong>, which was a collaboration with <strong>Miu Miu<\/strong> on its Women\u2019s Tales film series.<\/p>\n<p>An exploration of the female journey, friendship and perseverence, The Door is the fifth in the series that interprets the way women view the world and fashion with a political slant. The cast included <strong>Gabrielle Union, Alfre Woodard, Goapele, Emayatzy Corinealdi<\/strong>, and <strong>Adepero Oduye<\/strong>. The film, a little over nine minutes in length, focuses on an actual door on the modernist house of a main character (Union) who just went through a break-up. Directed by <strong>Storm Saulter<\/strong>,<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1517621\/\">&#8216;Better Mus Come&#8217;<\/a><\/strong> follows warring political factions in 1970s Jamaica as they  enlist the support of gangs to enforce their policies, and advance their  political agenda. In &#8216;<strong>Big Words,<\/strong>&#8216; <strong>Dorian Missick<\/strong> and <strong>Gbenga Akinnagbe<\/strong> star in this film, directed by<strong> Neil Drumming<\/strong>, as former members of a once-promising hip-hop group, who, now in their late 30&#8217;s, struggle with regret, disappointment, and change on Election Night 2008.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Ava-DuVernay-Venus-Vs..jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-48752\" title=\"Ava DuVernay Venus Vs.\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 169'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Ava-DuVernay-Venus-Vs.-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In June, DuVernay was invited to become a member of the <strong>Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences<\/strong> (AMPAS), both as a writer and a director. She was one of three invitees to receive that honor. She&#8217;s already a member of the <strong>Academy of Television Arts &amp; Sciences<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>On the television scene, DuVernay directed the documentary &#8216;<strong>Venus Vs.&#8217;<\/strong> for ESPN&#8217;s 30 for 30 series. It centered on how tennis star <strong>Venus Williams<\/strong> challenged the long-held practice of  women tennis players being paid less than their male counterparts at  Wimbledon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/oyelowo-selma.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload aligncenter size-full wp-image-48753\" title=\"oyelowo-selma\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 512 180'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/oyelowo-selma.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Back in July, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deadline.com\/2013\/07\/ava-duvernay-director-selma-movie-martin-luther-king\/\">Deadline<\/a> reported Pathe UK, Brad Pitt\u2019s Plan B and producer Christian Colson had chosen DuVernay to helm the MLK film <strong>Selma<\/strong>, with her &#8216;Middle of Nowhere&#8217; star <strong>David Oyelowo<\/strong> still on board as the fallen Civil Rights Leader. She replaces Lee Daniels, who made several attempts to get it off the ground but ended up directing another history film, <strong>&#8216;Lee Daniels&#8217; The Butler.&#8217; <\/strong>Time will tell if Daniels&#8217; initial cast of<strong> Hugh Jackman, Liam Neeson, Ray Winstone, Robert De Niro<\/strong>, and <strong>Cedric the Entertainer<\/strong> will still be involved with a new director attached.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Say-Yes-cast.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-48754\" title=\"Say Yes cast\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 274'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Say-Yes-cast-300x274.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"274\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>During the summer, she directed another short called \u2018<strong>Say Yes<\/strong>,\u2019 which featured <strong>Lance Gross<\/strong> and <strong>Kali Hawk<\/strong> in leading roles, with cameo appearances from \u201cAwkward Black Girl\u201d star and creator,<strong> Issa Rae<\/strong>, musical recording artist, <strong>N\u2019dambi<\/strong>, actress <strong>Lorraine Toussaint<\/strong>, and filmmaker and author <strong>Julie Dash<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The film explores the power of the affirmative, and the beauty that blossoms from embracing life. It was shown on TV One as well on <strong>HelloBeautiful.com<\/strong>, the world&#8217;s #1 digital platform for African American women and women of color.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/AFFRM-The-Call-In.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-48762\" title=\"AFFRM The Call-In\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 210'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/AFFRM-The-Call-In-300x210.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Though her independent lablel, AFFRM, DuVernay launched a podcast series dedicated to black filmmakers called <strong>&#8216;The Call-In.&#8217; <\/strong>where she interviewed black filmmakers from across the diaspora in casual, candid conversations focused on the craft. This year&#8217;s pool of talent included Mother of George&#8217;s <strong>Andrew Dosunmu<\/strong>, Newlyweed&#8217;s <strong>Shaka King<\/strong>, Things Fall Apart&#8217;s <strong>Charles Murray<\/strong>, God Loves Uganda&#8217;s <strong>Roger Ross Williams<\/strong>, and The Best Man Holiday&#8217;s <strong>Malcolm D. Lee<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t get any better when the hottest TV producer (Shonda Rhimes) calls you up to direct an episode of her captivating and twitter hog series <strong>&#8216;Scandal<\/strong>.&#8217;
