While there have been other films in the past that come to Canada as potential Oscar favorites such as 2009\u2019s \u2018Precious,\u2019 which went on to get a nomination and a win for Best Adapted Screenplay, this year we have films that are coming with a lot of anxiety and we\u2019re happy to say that some of these films were met with critical acclaim.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/12-Years-as-a-Slave-poster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-42250\" title=\"12 Years as a Slave poster\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 202 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/12-Years-as-a-Slave-poster-202x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2013\/10\/12-years-a-slave\/ \">12 Years a Slave<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 directed by <strong>Steve McQueen<\/strong> with a cast that includes <strong>Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Garret Dillahunt, Paul Giamatti, Scoot McNairy, Lupita Nyong\u2019o, Adepero Oduye, Sarah Paulson, Brad Pitt, Michael Kenneth Williams, Alfre Woodard, Chris Chalk, Taran Killam<\/strong>, and <strong>Bill Camp<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a film where all the cylinders are working to perfection. Based on a story of a freed Black man taken from his New York and turned into a slave for 12 Years, McQueen has presented a story we haven\u2019t seen since Roots aired on television nearly 40 years ago. No disrespect to Quentin Tarantino\u2019s \u2018Django Unchained,\u2019 which received a Best Picture nomination, but that film is apples and oranges when compared to McQueen\u2019s film. There is no comedy here. Nothing is tongue and cheek. With captivating performances given by Ejiofor and Fassbender and a mesmerizing performance by newcomer Nyong\u2019o, this is a film that will leave you haunted by the past as well as educated.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Mandela-Long-Walk-To-Freedom-poster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-47116\" title=\"Mandela Long Walk To Freedom poster\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 202 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Mandela-Long-Walk-To-Freedom-poster-202x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2013\/11\/mandela-long-walk-to-freedom\/ \">Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 directed by <strong>Justin Chadwick<\/strong> and starring <strong>Idris Elba<\/strong> and <strong>Naomie Harris<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over the years, there have been several documentaries and films on the former South African president; with Morgan Freeman\u2019s \u2018Invictus\u2019 being the most recent one. What Chadwick has done is present a film where, although Elba doesn\u2019t physically resemble Nelson Mandela, his spirit is embodied throughout the film. Most people are aware of Mandela the politician post-prison, but Chadwick\u2019s film shows us the man, the husband, and father we seldom hear or read out. Aided by Harris\u2019 portrayal of Winnie Mandela, the film, while nearly 3 hours, still gives one an insight to the legend we have read about.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Belle-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-41628\" title=\"Belle 1\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 168'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Belle-1-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Belle<\/strong> \u2013 directed by <strong>Amma Asante<\/strong> with a cast that includes <strong>Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Miranda Richardson, Tom Wilkinson, Sarah Gadon, Tom Felton<\/strong>, and <strong>Matthew Goode<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Asante has put together a charming and tale mixed with politics and romance in Belle. Mbatha-Raw plays the title character in a film where she\u2019s the biracial daughter of a wealthy British soldier and raised by his parents. Hiding the fact that she\u2019s family, Belle must overcome racism and politics while trying to find love in the 18th century.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Half-of-a-Yellow-Sun-pic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-42421\" title=\"Half of a Yellow Sun pic\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 151'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Half-of-a-Yellow-Sun-pic-300x151.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"151\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2013\/07\/watch-trailer-to-half-of-a-yellow-sun-with-thandie-newton-chiwetel-ejiofor\/\">Half of a Yellow Sun<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 directed by<strong> Biyi Bandele with a cast that includes Thandie Newton, John Boyega, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anika Noni Rose, Joseph Mawle<\/strong> and<strong> Genevieve Nnaji<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Based on author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie\u2018s Orange Prize-winning novel of the same name, Biyi Bandele\u2019s latest film centers on two sisters, Olanna and Kainene, during the Biafran War aka Nigerian Civil War. While the performances are strong from the ensemble cast, there\u2019s a lot of storylines packed in this film and it becomes confusing as to who\u2019s the protagonist in the film and which theme should take lead. Nevertheless, Ejiofor, who\u2019s also in 12 Years a Slave, proves again that he can slip into any role and take command of the scene.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/1982-Sharon-Leal-and-Hill-Harper.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-43765\" title=\"1982 - Sharon Leal and Hill Harper\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 210'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/1982-Sharon-Leal-and-Hill-Harper-300x210.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>1982<\/strong> \u2013 directed by <strong>Tommy Oliver<\/strong> with a cast that includes <strong>Hill Harper, Sharon Leal, Ruby Dee, Wayne Brady, Elise Neal, Bokeem Woodbine, Lala Anthony, Quinton Aaron, Omar Miller<\/strong> &amp; <strong>Troi Zee<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Tommy Oliver\u2019s debut film packs a lot of emotional punch. Set in Philadelphia during the early 80s, Hill Harper plays a father (Hill Harper), whose wife (Sharon Leal) succumbs to a crack cocaine addiction and him trying to wean his wife off it while shielding their 10 year old daughter (Troi Zee). While we\u2019ve seen this plot in other films such as Spike Lee\u2019s Jungle Fever with Samuel L. Jackson, Sharon Leal\u2019s performance here is just earth shattering. As for Hill Harper, one wonders why he hasn\u2019t been given more lead roles.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Andre-Benjamin-Jimi-Hendrix-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-44673\" title=\"Andre Benjamin Jimi Hendrix 1\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 140'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Andre-Benjamin-Jimi-Hendrix-1-300x140.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"140\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>All Is By My Side<\/strong> \u2013 written and directed by <strong>John Ridley<\/strong> with a cast that includes <strong>Andre Benjamin, Hayley Atwell, Imogen Poots, Andrew Buckley<\/strong>, and <strong>Ruth Negga<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Having spent years writing stories and adapting films such as Three Kings, Undercover Brother, Red Tails and 12 Years a Slave, Ridley is finally trying something new and directing his own project. With Outkast\u2019s singer and actor Andre Benjamin as the lead, Ridley attempts to tell the early beginnings of Rock and Roll legend Jimi Hendrix\u2019s career. Although the film plays at a slow pace, it doesn\u2019t help out that Ridley couldn\u2019t secure the rights to use Hendrix\u2019s music. Why watch a movie about a famous musician if you can\u2019t hear or listen to any of the music that made him famous.
