Simmons<\/strong> as his drill sergeant-like music teacher, won the grand jury prize and the audience award for U.S. dramatic features on Saturday night at the 30th annual Sundance Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p>Whiplash kicked off the 2014 festival as the opening night film and quickly sold to Sony Pictures Classics, buoyed by an enthusiastic response from audiences and critics.<\/p>\n<p>In a repeat of Sundance 2013, the Grand Jury prize dovetailed with the Audience Award (last year, <strong>Ryan Cooglar&#8217;s Fruitvale Station<\/strong> nabbed both prizes).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Rich-Hill-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-49388\" title=\"Rich Hill 1\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 168'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Rich-Hill-1-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The grand jury prize for U.S. documentaries went to <strong>\u201cRich Hill,\u201d<\/strong> a close-up portrait of three underprivileged boys living in the titular Missouri town; the film was directed by cousins <strong>Tracy Droz Tragos<\/strong> and <strong>Andrew Droz Palermo<\/strong>. In the same category, <strong>Michael Rossato-Bennett<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>\u201cAlive Inside: A Story of Music &amp; Memory,\u201d <\/strong>about the treatment of Alzheimer\u2019s patients through music, drew the audience award.<\/p>\n<p>The World Cinema grand jury prizes were awarded to <strong>\u201cTo Kill a Man,\u201d<\/strong> a revenge thriller from Chilean helmer <strong>Alejandro Fernandez Almendras<\/strong>, and <strong>\u201cReturn to Homs,\u201d <\/strong><strong>Talal Derki<\/strong>\u2019s documentary about the effects of the civil war in Syria. The audience awards for international features went to <strong>\u201cDifret,\u201d<\/strong> <strong>Zeresenay Berhane Mehari<\/strong>\u2019s dramatic examination of oppressed girls and women in Ethiopia, and<strong> \u201cThe Green Prince,\u201d <\/strong><strong>Nadav Schirman<\/strong>\u2019s documentary portrait of Israeli secret-service informant Mosab Hassan Yousef.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Fishing-Without-Nets-11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-49389\" title=\"Fishing Without Nets 1\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 168'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Fishing-Without-Nets-11-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cutter Hodierne <\/strong>drew the U.S. dramatic directing award for his largely non-English-language directing debut, <strong>\u201cFishing Without Nets,\u201d<\/strong> a bleak tale of a hijacked oil tanker as seen from the perspective of one of the young Somali pirates. The Waldo Salt screenwriting award was presented to writer-director <strong>Craig Johnson<\/strong> for his sibling dark comedy<strong> \u201cThe Skeleton Twins,\u201d <\/strong>which stars <strong>Bill Hader<\/strong> and <strong>Kristen Wiig<\/strong> and was widely considered one of the dramatic competition\u2019s most commercial entries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Christopher Blauvelt<\/strong> received the U.S. dramatic cinematography prize for his 35mm lensing on <strong>\u201cLow Down,\u201d<\/strong> director <strong>Jeff Preiss<\/strong>\u2019 fictionalized account of two years in the life of jazz pianist Joe Albany. Special jury prizes were awarded to the <strong>Octopus Project<\/strong>, which composed the musical score for <strong>David Zellner<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>\u201cKumiko the Treasure Hunter,\u201d <\/strong>and to writer-director <strong>Justin Simien<\/strong>, named a \u201cbreakthrough talent\u201d for his racially charged comedy <strong>\u201cDear White People.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Ben-Cotner-and-Ryan-White.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-49390\" title=\"Ben Cotner and Ryan White\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 217'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Ben-Cotner-and-Ryan-White-300x217.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"217\" \/><\/a><\/strong>In the American documentary competition, <strong>Ben Cotner<\/strong> and <strong>Ryan White<\/strong> shared the directing prize for <strong>\u201cThe Case Against 8,\u201d<\/strong> their inside look at the case to overturn California\u2019s same-sex marriage ban. <strong>Rachel Beth Anderson<\/strong> and helmer <strong>Ross Kauffman<\/strong> drew a cinematography prize for their dynamic lensing on<strong> \u201cE-Team,\u201d<\/strong> which follows the experiences of four globe-trotting Human Rights Watch activists.<\/p>\n<p>Special jury prizes for U.S. documentaries were voted to <strong>Jesse Moss<\/strong>\u2019 <strong>\u201cThe Overnighters,\u201d <\/strong>a portrait of social and economic transformation in an oil-rich region of North Dakota, for its \u201cintuitive filmmaking\u201d; and to <strong>\u201cWatchers of the Sky,\u201d<\/strong> <strong>Edet Belzberg<\/strong>\u2019s multistranded look at courageous activism worldwide, for its use of animation. \u201cWatchers of the Sky\u201d also picked up an editing prize for Jenny Golden and Karen Sim.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Imperial-Dreams-11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-49391\" title=\"Imperial Dreams 1\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 168'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Imperial-Dreams-11-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Best of Next audience award was voted to <strong>\u201cImperial Dreams,\u201d<\/strong> <strong>Malik Vitthal\u2019<\/strong>s directing debut about a young writer and ex-con trying to reconnect with his young son in Watts, Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>In the World Cinema dramatic competition, Australian helmer <strong>Sophie Hyde<\/strong> picked up the directing prize for <strong>\u201c52 Tuesdays,\u201d<\/strong> which was shot, per its title, over the course of a year, only on Tuesdays. Norwegian writer-helmer <strong>Eskil Vogt<\/strong> received the screenwriting prize for <strong>\u201cBlind,\u201d<\/strong> his drama about a woman who has lost her sight. <strong>Hong Khaou<\/strong>\u2019s gay-themed grief drama <strong>\u201cLilting\u201d<\/strong> received the cinematography prize for <strong>Ula Pontikos<\/strong>\u2019 lensing, and <strong>\u201cGod Help the Girl,\u201d<\/strong> a musical directed by <strong>Belle and Sebastian<\/strong>\u2019s Stuart Murdoch, received a special jury prize.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/20000-Days-on-Earth.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-49392\" title=\"20,000 Days on Earth\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 200'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/20000-Days-on-Earth-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the World Cinema documentary competition, <strong>\u201c20,000 Days on Earth,\u201d <\/strong><strong>Iain Forsyth<\/strong> and <strong>Jane Pollard<\/strong>\u2019s film about a fictitious 24 hours in the life of Nick Cave, won a pair of awards for directing and editing (by Jonathan Amos). <strong>\u201cHappiness\u201d <\/strong>drew the cinematography prize for lensers Thomas Balmes (who also directed) and Nina Bernfeld.<\/p>\n<p>As announced on Friday, the $20,000 Alfred P. Sloan prize, presented annually to a film that focuses on science\/technology as a theme, was given to Mike Cahill\u2019s Premieres entry \u201cI Origins,\u201d a cerebral romantic drama about a pair of scientists studying the mysterious properties of the human eye.
