Among the shorts and feature films being shown on Day 3 at the 18th Annual Urbanworld Film Festival<\/strong> were Jeneatte Kong’s Finding Samuel Lowe, Kenneth Price’s The Hip Hop Fellow, Laura Checkoway’s Lucky, Mike Ott’s Lake Los Angeles, Damian Marcano’s God Loves The Fighter, Zereseney Berhane Mehari’s Difret<\/strong>, and\u00a0Nefertite Nguvu’s In The Morning<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

There was even a Purple Rain special sing-along presentation<\/strong> to celebrate the film’s 30th Anniversary.<\/p>\n

\"Selma<\/a><\/p>\n

The highlight of the evening was a spotlight conversation with acclaimed festival alumni, writer\/director Ava DuVernay<\/strong>, who presented the festival with never-before-seen clips of her upcoming film, SELMA<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cSELMA\u201d is the story of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.\u2019s historic struggle to secure voting rights for all people \u2013 a dangerous and terrifying campaign that culminated with the epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, and led to President Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The film\u2019s release will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the landmark legislation.<\/p>\n

The film stars\u00a0David Oyelowo<\/strong>\u00a0as Martin Luther King Jr.,\u00a0Tom Wilkinson<\/strong>\u00a0as Lyndon Baines Johnson,\u00a0Carmen Ejogo<\/strong>\u00a0as Coretta Scott King,Andre Holland<\/strong>\u00a0as Andrew Young,\u00a0Omar J. Dorsey\u00a0<\/strong>as James Orange,\u00a0Alessandro Nivola<\/strong>\u00a0as John Doar,\u00a0Dylan Baker\u00a0<\/strong>as J. Edgar Hoover,Giovanni Ribisi\u00a0<\/strong>as Lee White,\u00a0Tessa Thompson<\/strong>as Diane Nash,\u00a0Colman Domingo<\/strong>\u00a0as Ralph Abernathy,\u00a0Stephen Root\u00a0<\/strong>as Al Lingo,\u00a0Jeremy Strong\u00a0<\/strong>as James Reeb, with\u00a0Tim Roth\u00a0<\/strong>as George Wallace, and\u00a0Oprah Winfrey\u00a0<\/strong>as Annie Lee Cooper.<\/p>\n

Introduced by ‘Free Angela’ director Shola Lynch<\/strong>, a panel discussion about the film was held with DuVernay and David Oyelowo<\/strong>. Moderating the talkback was Urbanworld Executive Producer Gabrielle Glore<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cSELMA<\/strong>\u201d will have a limited release in the U.S. on Christmas day and will open wide on January 9, 2015.<\/p>\n
