Ava DuVernay, Justin Simien, Selma, Dear White People Nab Independent Spirit Awards Nominations<\/strong>Posted by Wilson Morales<\/p>\n

\"Spirit<\/a><\/p>\n

Ava DuVernay’s Selma<\/strong> nabbed five nominations for the 2015 Film Independent Spirit Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Cinematography. Leading the nominations is Birdman<\/strong><\/em> with six, while the other Best Pic nods went to \u00a0\u201cBoyhood,\u201d \u201cLove Is Strange,\u201d and \u201cWhiplash.\u201d<\/p>\n

Justin Simien’s<\/strong> directorial debut, Dear White People<\/strong>, got nominations for First Feature and First Screenplay.<\/p>\n

The nominations were announced by Rosario Dawson<\/strong> and Diego Luna<\/strong> at the W Hotel in Hollywood. The winners will be announced Feb. 21, \u00a0the day before the Oscars, in ceremonies at the usual location in a white tent on Santa Monica Beach.<\/p>\n
