\"BFCC<\/a><\/p>\n

The Black Film Critics Circle<\/strong> (BFCC) has voted \u201cSELMA\u201d<\/strong> Best Film of 2014, AVA DUVERNAY<\/strong> Best Director for \u201cSELMA\u201d, GUGU MBATHA-RAW<\/strong> Best Actress for \u201cBELLE\u201d and DAVID OYELOWO<\/strong> Best Actor for \u201cSELMA\u201d. The announcement was made today by Mike Sargent<\/strong>, co-president, BFCC.<\/p>\n

\"Selma<\/a>Recognizing achievements in theatrical motion pictures, the BFCC awarded prizes in 13 categories including best picture, best director, original and adapted screenplay, best actor, best actress, best supporting actor, best supporting actress, best animated feature, best independent film, best documentary feature, best foreign film and best ensemble. Special Signature awards are also given to industry pioneers and rising stars.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis has been an incredibly diverse and progressive year for Black film,\u201d<\/strong> says Sargent. \u201cnot only have we had dramas, comedies, thrillers and action films 2014 has seen the rise of the Black female director.\u201d<\/strong> \u201c This is also a year where we have seen bio-pics on no less then five black historical figures. And we’ve seen films starring Black actors from the diaspora and with the rise of Nollywood in the global marketplace the future of black film looks very bright. Congratulations to all of the winners.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pioneer \u2013 Ava DuVernay<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Crush:<\/a>This year’s Pioneer Award is given to producer Ava DuVernay. Ava has proved that persistence; artistic integrity and commitment to quality will yield amazing results. Ava has been a first in many ways, she was the first director to win Best director at the Sundance film Festival, the first African-American female director to be nominated for Golden Globe and we completely believe that she will continue to be a force in Hollywood to be reckoned with and create powerful, memorable, evocative work that will stand the test of time. Ava continues to expand the boundaries of what women and black filmmakers can achieve and embody the very essence of the word Pioneer.<\/p>\n

\"Justin<\/a>Rising Star \u2013 Justin Simien<\/strong><\/p>\n

His directorial debut with “Dear White People” is one of the strongest most promising debut s we have ever seen. From his festival successes and turning his thesis short film into a feature film that is both funny and insightful makes us proud as African-Americans and reminds us of how important it is for us to be able to have the medium of film is a voice to express our experiences as part of the human condition.<\/p>\n

SPECIAL MENTION \u2013 Dear White People<\/strong><\/p>\n

Special Mention goes to “Dear White People” a hip modern satirical drama that address issues of race, gender, identity set in predominantly white Ivy League School . The film was funny, bold, and tackled difficult social issues with a bravery and original voice that is much needed in a marketplace crowded with remakes, reboots and sequels.<\/p>\n

Founded in 2010, the Black Film Critics Circle is a membership organization comprised of film critics of color from daily newspapers, weekly newspapers, magazines, radio, television and qualifying on-line publications. The organization is dedicated to honoring excellence of professionals in the theatrical motion picture industry in U.S. and World Cinema. Its mission is to celebrate contributions and achievements in film by people of the black Diaspora who work in front of and behind the camera, maintain the integrity of a true Critics organization and advance a collective vision of journalists of the black Diaspora. BFCC assists in the development of new talent in the field of entertainment journalism through educational opportunities, mentoring and strategic partnerships and raises awareness of the significance of black film and black film history as a critical part of film culture and preservation. The organization meets annually in December to vote on the year\u2019s films. BFCC\u2019s Founding Members are journalists Mike Sargent (WBAI-FM NY\/ARISE.TV), Wilson Morales (Blackfilm.com), and Shawn Edwards (WDAF-TV Fox Affiliate Kansas City, MO).<\/p>\n
