On June 30, 2015, Copeland became the first African American woman to be promoted to principal dancer in ABT&#8217;s 75-year history.<\/p>\n<p>The film had its World Premiere at\u00a0the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p>Copeland began training in ballet at age 13 while living in a welfare motel with her mother and siblings, learning so quickly she was dancing en pointe within months. She went from lessons at the local Boys &amp; Girls Club to living part-time with a sponsor family while attending dance school. She&#8217;s the first African-American ballerina to dance lead in ABT\u2019s Swan Lake. Copeland has also performed with Prince at Madison Square Garden, serves on President Obama\u2019s fitness council, and appeared as a guest judge this season on Fox\u2019s So You Think You Can Dance. The doc chronicles her comeback after a potentially career ending injury.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload aligncenter size-full wp-image-56208\"
