Whether\u00a0a film showcased a individual&#8217;s performance or an ensemble, all made their mark in\u00a0one scene or another.<\/p>\n<p>From blockbusters like Straight Outta Compton to critical favorites like Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Dope and War Room, here&#8217;s a look at the crop of fresh Black talent that either\u00a0made their debut in theaters or expanded their visual profile.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/2015\/06\/rj-cyler-talks-me-and-earl-and-the-dying-girl\/\">RJ Cyler<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Me and Earl and the Dying Girl<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/RJ-Cyler-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-67985\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 217 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/RJ-Cyler--217x300.jpg\" alt=\"RJ Cyler\" width=\"217\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of the critically acclaimed films that came out this summer was director Alphonso Gomez-Rejon\u2019s feature debut, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, which featured breakout performances from its cast (Thomas Mann, RJ Cyler, Olivia Cooke). Earlier in the year, the film played at Sundance, where it won the U.S. Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic and the Audience Award for U.S. Drama.<\/p>\n<p>As Earl, Jacksonville, Florida, native Ronald Cyler II (nicknamed RJ), is the youngest of three boys but Cyler had always entertained in one way or another.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Me-And-Earl-And-The-Dying-Girl-Olivia-Cooke-Thomas-Mann-and-RJ-Cyler.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-67987\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 221'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Me-And-Earl-And-The-Dying-Girl-Olivia-Cooke-Thomas-Mann-and-RJ-Cyler-300x221.jpg\" alt=\"Me And Earl And The Dying Girl Olivia Cooke, Thomas Mann, and RJ Cyler\" width=\"300\" height=\"221\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Me and Earl and the Dying Girl tells the story of Greg (Thomas Mann), a high school senior who is trying to blend in anonymously, avoiding deeper relationships as a survival strategy for navigating the social minefield that is teenage life. He even describes his constant companion Earl (RJ Cyler), with whom he makes short film parodies of classic movies, as more of a \u2018co-worker\u2019 than a best friend. He and his fellow outcasts share a voracious appreciation for all things \u201990s hip-hop, opting to sport Cross-Colours and Z. Cavariccis at the risk of being clowned at school. He dreams of attending Harvard, but first he has to make it home every day. After taking him on an all-night adventure through their hometown, Margo suddenly disappears\u2013leaving behind cryptic clues for Quentin to decipher. The search leads Quentin and his quick-witted friends (Austin Abrams, Justice Smith, Halston Sage, and Jaz Sinclair) on an exhilarating adventure that is equal parts hilarious and moving. Gary Gray<\/strong> was a fresh face on the big screen. Although the guys who played N.W.A. (<strong>O\u2019Shea Jackson Jr.\u00a0<\/strong>as Ice Cube,<strong>\u00a0Jason Mitchell<\/strong>\u00a0as Easy-E<strong>, Corey Hawkins\u00a0<\/strong>as Dr. Dre,\u00a0<strong>Neil Brown Jr.<\/strong>\u00a0as DJ Yella and\u00a0<strong>Aldis Hodge<\/strong>\u00a0as MC Ren) were the focal point, the supporting cast did a tremendous job as well.\u00a0<strong>Marlon Yates Jr.<\/strong> as DOC, <strong>R. Marcus Taylor<\/strong> as Suge Knight, <strong>Carra Patterson\u00a0<\/strong>as Tomica Woods, Eazy-E\u2019s widow,\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Alexandra Shipp\u00a0<\/strong>as\u00a0<strong>Kim Jackson, <\/strong>Ice Cube\u2019s wife.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Straight-Outta-Compton-Marlon-Yates-Jr.-R.-Marcus-Taylor-Carra-Patterson-and-Alexandra-Shipp.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-71787\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 207 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Straight-Outta-Compton-Marlon-Yates-Jr.-R.-Marcus-Taylor-Carra-Patterson-and-Alexandra-Shipp-207x300.jpg\" alt=\"Straight Outta Compton Marlon Yates Jr., R.
