Marvel Finally Confirms Ryan Coogler As Black Panther Director<\/strong>Posted by Wilson Morales<\/p>\n

After months of everyone else saying it’s a done deal, Marvel Studios has confirmed that “Fruitvale Stattion”<\/strong> and “Creed”<\/strong> director\u00a0Ryan Coogler<\/strong>\u00a0will helm\u00a0“Black Panther.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Black<\/a><\/p>\n

Although Empire magazine had stated last December that Marvel president Kevin Fiege<\/strong> had told them that Coogler had the job, there was never an official quote. Now, it’s done.<\/p>\n

According to Variety, Feige is producing the movie, which stars Chadwick Boseman as T\u2019Challa<\/strong>, the prince of the African nation of Wakanda, who must take over the mantel after his father\u2019s murder.<\/p>\n

“We are fortunate to have such an esteemed filmmaker join the Marvel family,\u201d<\/strong> said Feige in a statement. \u201cThe talents Ryan showcased in his first two films easily made him our top choice to direct \u2018Black Panther.\u2019 Many fans have waited a long time to see Black Panther in his own film, and with Ryan we know we\u2019ve found the perfect director to bring T\u2019Challa\u2019s story to life.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Before Coogler, there were other names in the mix for the job such as Ava DuVernay, Rick Fuyimaya<\/strong> and F. Gary Gray<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"Black<\/a><\/p>\n

Coogler first came to attention when he won the HBO Short Film Award for “Fig.”<\/strong> He then went on to win the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for U.S. dramatic film at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival for his feature debut, “Fruitvale Station,”<\/strong> which starred Michael B. Jordan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"Creed<\/a><\/p>\n

Coogler and Jordan collaborated again on his current “Creed,”<\/strong> a spinoff to the Rocky franchise co-starring Sylvester Stallone<\/strong>. The film has grossed over $100M and amassed critical acclaim and a recent Golden Globe win for Stallone.<\/p>\n

In an\u00a0interview with Empire Magazine<\/a>, Feige said that the main reason they decided to bring the story of Black Panther forward was because of how influential his character would be on the upcoming Avengers films,\u00a0Infinity War \u2014 Part 1\u00a0and\u00a0Infinity War \u2014 Part 2.<\/p>\n

The executive also added that\u00a0Black Panther\u00a0would be the first Marvel film to feature a majority black cast.<\/div>\n
