From Thursday, April 21, through Sunday, April 24, BAMcin\u00e9matek, in partnership with the\u00a0ActNow Foundation<\/strong>, presents the sixth\u00a0New Voices in Black Cinema<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>festival. Reflecting the wide spectrum of views and themes within African and diaspora communities in Brooklyn and beyond, the series includes 10 feature length films, including four New York premieres, and two shorts programs.\u00a0New Voices in Black Cinema<\/em>, one of a variety of ActNow programs presented in partnership with BAMcin\u00e9matek since 2009, provides a showcase for new and established voices in black independent cinema.<\/p>\n

\"How<\/a><\/p>\n

The four New York premieres include Tahir Jetter\u2019s Sundance hit,\u00a0How To Tell You\u2019re a Douchebag<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(April 23), a subversive take on the rom-com inspired by the likes of Spike Lee\u2019s\u00a0Mo\u2019 Better Blues<\/em>\u00a0and Stephen Frears\u2019\u00a0High Fidelity<\/em>; Sean Hodgkinson\u2019s\u00a0Trafficked<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(April 23), in which a trio of vacationers are seduced by a charming stranger\u2014with disturbing repercussions;\u00a0Danny and the Human Zoo<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(April 22), Destiny Ekaragha\u2019s BBC-produced drama written by and loosely based on the life and career of stand-up comedian Lenny Henry; and Jake Mahaffy\u2019s Venice Film Festival Orizzonti award-winner\u00a0Free in Deed<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(April 23), \u201ca potent, provocative story\u201d (Variety<\/em>) about the duplicitous storefront church circuit.<\/p>\n

\"Somewhere<\/a><\/p>\n

The festival kicks off on April 21 with a screening of Jonas Carpignano\u2019s wrenching drama\u00a0Mediterranea<\/em><\/strong>, about two African men and their experiences immigrating to Italy. \u201cRich and understanding\u201d (The Guardian<\/em>), the film is a timely and critical portrayal of the ongoing immigration crisis. Also screening on opening night is\u00a0Somewhere in the Middle<\/em><\/strong>, Lanre Olabisi\u2019s (August the First<\/em>) sophomore feature, an ensemble work featuring outstanding performances by a quartet of actors who play complicated lovers.<\/p>\n

\"Imperial<\/a><\/p>\n

New Voices in Black Cinema<\/em>\u00a0continues with Sundance Audience Award winner Malik Vitthal\u2019s\u00a0Imperial Dreams<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(April 22). Playing a reformed gangster fresh out of prison, a pre-Star Wars<\/em>\u00a0John Boyega struggles to turn his life around and reconnect with family and friends in this riveting drama. Taking inspiration from the French New Wave and set in LA,\u00a0French Dirty<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(April 24), directed by brothers Jesse Allain-Marcus and Wade Allain-Marcus, follows Vincent (Wade Allain-Marcus) taking stock of his life at 30 and processing a hook up with his best friend\u2019s girlfriend.<\/p>\n

\"French<\/a><\/p>\n

Former Black Panther Jamal Joseph directs\u00a0Chapter & Verse<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(April 22), the story of an ex-gang member (Daniel Beaty) fighting to keep a teenage boy from making similar mistakes. The documentary\u00a0When Elephants Fight\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(April 22), directed by Michael Ramsdell and narrated by Robin Wright, reveals the ways Western nations and corporations have furthered ongoing civil unrest in the Democratic Republic of Congo by buying \u201cconflict minerals\u201d used in the making of consumer electronics.\u00a0Stories of Our Lives<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(April 24), directed byJim Chuchu, paints a revealing portrait of LGBT Kenyans which bravely gives a voice to a tragically marginalized community in a country where homosexuality is illegal.<\/p>\n
