Teenager Tracy Turnblad\u2019s dream is to dance on \u201cThe Corny Collins Show,\u201d a local TV program. When, against all odds, Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight and meets a colorful array of characters, including the resident dreamboat, Link; the ambitious mean girl, Amber; an African-American boy she meets in detention, Seaweed; and his mother, Motormouth Maybelle, the owner of a local record store. Tracy\u2019s mother is the indomitable Edna Turnblad, and she eventually encourages Tracy on her campaign to integrate the all-white \u201cCorny Collins Show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Harvey-Fierstein.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-82946\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-82946\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 200 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Harvey-Fierstein-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Harvey Fierstein\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Harvey Fierstein, who is also writing the teleplay, will play Edna Turnblad, a role he created and won a Tony Award for in the stage version of \u201cHairspray.\u201d The quintessential Edna, Fierstein portrayed the character for the show\u2019s first two years of its seven-year run at the Neil Simon Theatre on Broadway.<\/p>\n<p>As an actor, he is a member of an elite group who have won Tonys as Best Actor in a Musical (\u201cHairspray\u201d) and Best Actor in a Play (for his own \u201cTorch Song Trilogy\u201d). As a writer, Fierstein won Tonys for \u201cLa Cage Aux Folles\u201d and \u201cTorch Song Trilogy,\u201d and received three more Tony nominations for writing \u201cKinky Boots,\u201d \u201dNewsies\u201d and \u201dCasa Valentina.\u201d His adaptation of \u201cFunny Girl\u201d is currently running, along with \u201cKinky Boots,\u201d in London.<\/p>\n<p>Hudson, who will play Motormouth Maybelle, is currently completing a triumphant run in the acclaimed revival of &#8220;The Color Purple&#8221; \u2014 performing the role of Shug Avery in her Broadway debut. Soon after, she released her first album, \u201cJennifer Hudson,\u201d which debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 Chart and sold more than 500,000 copies in the U.S. through the first six weeks. The album was nominated for four Grammys and won for best R&amp;B album.<\/p>\n<p>Hudson continued on the bigscreen following \u201cDreamgirls\u201d and has since co-starred in such films as \u201cSex and the City,\u201d \u201cThe Secret Life of Bees\u201d and Spike Lee\u2019s latest film, \u201cChi-Raq.\u201d Her TV credits include NBC\u2019s \u201cSmash,\u201d Fox\u2019s \u201cEmpire\u201d and HBO\u2019s newest telepic, \u201cConfirmation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHairspray Live!\u201d reunites Hudson with executive producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who worked with her previously on NBC\u2019s \u201cSmash\u201d and the 85th and 87th Oscar telecasts, which they also produced.<\/p>\n<p>Television director Alex Rudzinski will join stage director Kenny Leon (\u201cThe Wiz Live!\u201d). Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (the upcoming \u201cA Few Good Men Live!\u201d) serve as executive producers of \u201cHairspray Live!\u201d Harvey Fierstein will provide a new teleplay and Jerry Mitchell (\u201cKinky Boots,\u201d \u201cOn Your Feet\u201d) will serve as choreographer for the live production with music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (\u201cSmash\u201d and Broadway\u2019s upcoming \u201cCharlie and the Chocolate Factory\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHairspray Live!\u201d will air Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 8 p.m. ET\/PT and will originate from Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHairspray
