\"Hamilton<\/a><\/p>\n

Nominations for the 2016 Tony Awards<\/strong> were announced today and as expected Hamilton<\/strong> dominated the field with a record 16 nominations.<\/p>\n

As expected, creator-star Lin-Manuel Miranda<\/strong> and co-star Leslie Odom Jr.<\/strong> took spots in the best actor in a musical category, while Phillipa Soo<\/strong> nabbed a lead actress nod and Renee Elise Goldsberry<\/strong> took a featured actress slot. In the featured musical actor race, three of the five spots are filled with \u201cHamilton\u201d actors: Daveed Diggs, Jonathan Groff<\/strong> and Christopher Jackson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Book of Mormon\u201d alums Nikki M. James<\/strong> and Andrew Rannells<\/strong> announced the nominees for the Tony Awards on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. ET live from the Diamond Horseshoe at the Paramount Hotel in New York City.<\/p>\n

\"2016<\/a>Also doing well was \u201cShuffle Along,<\/strong>\u201d the George C. Wolfe\u00a0<\/strong>musical that opened last week, with 10 nominations. Surprisingly, its leading lady Audra Mcdonald failed to land a nomination.<\/p>\n

Danai Gurira’s Eclipsed<\/strong> landed six nominations, including one for Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o for Best Actress. Co-stars Pascale Armand<\/strong> and Saycon Sengbloh<\/strong> will compete against each other for Best Actress in a Featured Role.<\/p>\n

All in all, history was made as 12 Blacks received nominations in the acting categories, surpassing the previous high of 9 from 2013.<\/p>\n

Emceed by Tony Award winner and \u201cThe Late Late Show\u201d host James Corden, the Tonys will air June 12 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS<\/p>\n
