Charles Murray<\/strong>, a \u00a0writer\/co-executive producer on the final two seasons\u00a0on FX’s Sons of Anarchy<\/strong> and director of the indie film Things Never Said<\/strong>, has been named as the executive producer and showrunner to Lee Daniels<\/strong>‘ new series for Fox, ‘Star.’<\/strong><\/p>\n

Deadline<\/a> is reporting that he has signed an overall deal with 20th Century Fox TV, whose cable division Fox 21 TV Studios produced the gritty FX drama series. The site also states that\u00a0Murray will be developing his own projects for the studio.<\/p>\n

Murray recently served as executive producer on the first season of Netflix\u2019s next Marvel series, Luke Cage<\/strong>, which will air in September and as one of the writers on A+E Networks\u2019 upcoming Roots<\/strong> remake, which airs during Memorial Day weekend.<\/p>\n

Written by Daniels and Tom Donaghy<\/strong> and set in Atlanta, Star revolves around three talented young singers (Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny and Brittany O\u2019Grady<\/strong>), who form a girl group with hopes of making it big in the music industry. Variety states that the project has been described in the vein of \u201cDreamgirls,\u201d while incorporating the manufacturing of modern-day girl groups, showcasing the allure and heartache of the cut-throat music scene, and exploring cultural themes from a new perspective.<\/p>\n

\"Lee<\/a><\/p>\n

Queen Latifah<\/strong> will play Carlotta, the owner of an Atlanta beauty salon who has an amazing voice and becomes a surrogate mother to the three girls in the group, even though she doesn\u2019t approve of their musical dreams.\u00a0The series will feature original music, along with musical fantasy sequences, as the girls dream of their future.\u00a0Benjamin Bratt<\/strong> and Nicholas Gonzalez<\/strong> co-star with Lenny Kravitz<\/strong> set to come on as a guest star.<\/p>\n

Murray will executive produce alongside Daniels, Donaghy as well as Pamela Oas Williams<\/strong> and Effie Brown<\/strong>. His previous TV credits include writing and producing on Criminal Minds, Castle, Star Wars: The Clone Wars<\/strong> and Third Watch<\/strong>. He also\u00a0directed the first episode to\u00a0Kurt Sutter\u2019s FX series, The Bastard Executioner<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Interesting enough, back in 2011,\u00a0Murray\u00a0was going to write\u00a0and executive produce a police\u00a0drama\u00a0series for CBS\u00a0with\u00a0<\/strong>Latifah set to executive produce through her production banner Flavor Unit Entertainment. That project never came to fruition.<\/p>\n
