EW<\/a> is reporting that Phylicia Rashad<\/strong> will have a recurring role\u00a0on Fox’s hit series, Empire<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Cosby Show alum will play Diane Dubois, a powerhouse from one of New York’s oldest and most prominent African-American families. As the mother of ambitious city councilman Angelo Dubois (guest star Taye Diggs<\/strong>), she has her sights set on higher office for her only son, and she’ll stop at nothing to groom him. Diana’s interactions with Cookie, Lucious and the rest of the Lyon clan will lay bare the stark class divides that can exist, even within the black community.<\/p>\n

Empire<\/em>\u00a0premieres on Sept. 21 at 9 p.m. on Fox.<\/p>\n

The main cast includes:\u00a0Terrence Howard as Lucious Lyon, Taraji P. Henson as Cookie Lyon, Jussie Smollett as Jamal Lyon, Bryshere Gray as Hakeem Lyon, Trai Byers as Andre Lyon, Grace Gealey as Anika Gibbons, Kaitlin Doubleday as Rhonda Lyon, Gabourey Sidibe as Becky, and Ta\u2019Rhonda Jones as Porsha.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Coincidentally, Rashad and Terrence Howard appeared together on Broadway in the 2008 ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’<\/strong> revival.<\/p>\n

The drama returns in Season Three, as the battle continues for the Soul of Empire. Each member of the Lyon family must cope with the events that were set in motion in the Season Two finale. Lucious pursues his music legacy with his streaming service, while also clashing with his half-brother, Tariq (Morocco Omari), who is leading a federal task force investigating him. Cookie aims to start over, in pursuit of her own happiness \u2013 a series of flashbacks reveal how Loretha Holloway became Cookie Lyon and how Cookie met Lucious. Meanwhile, the Lyon brothers \u2013 Andre, Jamal and Hakeem \u2013 all are determined to overcome the events of last season and move on, but the choices they face will become a battle for the soul of the Lyon family.<\/p>\n

The site also stated that Scott Mescudi, a.k.a. Kid Cudi<\/strong>, is playing a rapper named Gram, a rival to Hakeem (Bryshere \u201cYazz\u201d Gray); French Montana<\/strong> will appear as music mogul Vaughn, a member of Lucious Lyon\u2019s (Terrence Howard) inner circle; and Mariah Carey<\/strong> is playing a singer named Kitty who joins Jamal (Jussie Smollett) in the recording studio.<\/p>\n
