It reveals real characters with both their ups and downs but not so dramatized as to feel forced or self-conscious.<\/p>\n<p>These personalities have evolved emotionally with a reasonably well grounded sense, offering a positive view of how their parents tried their best \u2014 in their own ways \u2014 to transform their own rags-to-riches stories into lessons for their kids. And here in this series, audiences get to learn what they\u2019ve learned and how it has transformed them into complex people \u2014 not just privleged kids.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Growing-Up-Hip-Hop-S-2-Premiere-Boogie-Dash-Egypt-Criss-Kristinia-DeBarge-and-Romeo-Miller.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-90587\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 206'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Growing-Up-Hip-Hop-S-2-Premiere-Boogie-Dash-Egypt-Criss-Kristinia-DeBarge-and-Romeo-Miller-300x206.jpg\" alt=\"growing-up-hip-hop-s-2-premiere-boogie-dash-egypt-criss-kristinia-debarge-and-romeo-miller\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So here it is a year later and four of the progeny of famous hip hop stars \u2014 <strong>Romeo Miller, Kristina Debarge, Egypt Criss<\/strong> and <strong>Damon \u201cBoogie\u201d Dash<\/strong> \u2014 have sat down a year after the first Blackfilm.com session to discuss what this past year and year to come bodes for them. But what transpired here with this interview is only the beginning. We will have to patiently view further episodes to find what they are going through in the coming year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You\u2019ve done this show for a year and had cameras trained on you. How does the scrutiny change and\/or affect you and your relationship with each other? You have a new sense of how this process works.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Growing-Up-Hip-Hop-S-2-Premiere-Romeo-Miller.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-90594\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 267 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Growing-Up-Hip-Hop-S-2-Premiere-Romeo-Miller-267x300.jpg\" alt=\"growing-up-hip-hop-s-2-premiere-romeo-miller\" width=\"267\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Romeo Miller:<\/strong> You definitely have to know what you\u2019re signing up for and that\u2019s with anything in life. If you want to be a doctor you got to be ready to put in hours and hours of study. If you want to be an astronaut you have to be prepared to go to space one day and leave your family.<\/p>\n<p>When you sign up for a reality show you have to know that everybody in your life will be tested. Because\u2026 Guess what? Everything becomes public and that can sometimes make or break a friendship or relationship and that\u2019s what you see more of in this season. You see the dynamics of reality television and how being out in the public affects a person.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boogie Dash:<\/strong> It probably brings us closer. Let&#8217;s say we do something last season that wasn\u2019t for the best and we\u2019re about to do it again, someone can spot it out and be like, \u201cYo, don\u2019t do that because last season that wasn\u2019t a good look, let&#8217;s tighten it up a little.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Growing-Up-Hip-Hop-S-2-Premiere-Boogie-Dash.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-90586\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 262 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Growing-Up-Hip-Hop-S-2-Premiere-Boogie-Dash-262x300.jpg\" alt=\"growing-up-hip-hop-s-2-premiere-boogie-dash\" width=\"262\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d say we all have each other\u2019s backs for sure. It\u2019s not like Love &amp; Hip Hop where we\u2019re all trying to bash each other, I think we\u2019re just trying to help each other at the end of the day. Even with my real problems I get good advice from everyone here. I got another kinda love for the people here, I respect everyone here on another kind of level. I\u2019m happy this cast is this cast and nobody else.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt Criss:<\/strong> We all have each other\u2019s backs and it\u2019s nice to be here together and learning from one another. There are problems that we need to patch up and it\u2019s a good look at what was left from last season. There were things that were said and feelings that were expressed and it wasn&#8217;t the best, but we patched it up. You\u2019ve got to tune in for the rest because I can\u2019t say what happened. But basically we were wiser. We know what to avoid and what we can go through with.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Growing-Up-Hip-Hop-S-2-Premiere-Kristinia-DeBarge.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-90591\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 249 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Growing-Up-Hip-Hop-S-2-Premiere-Kristinia-DeBarge-249x300.jpg\" alt=\"growing-up-hip-hop-s-2-premiere-kristinia-debarge\" width=\"249\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Kristina Debarge:<\/strong> We all have our issues and I feel like one of the people I can relate to the most this season is Someone, we both have a lot of family issues. You\u2019ll see us kind of bonding over that and confiding in one another. I don\u2019t know if I\u2019d say it changed me or anything. I\u2019ve been dealing with this my whole life, now it\u2019s just in the public eye. It\u2019s a little different, but it still feels the same. There are times when I feel it and I\u2019m like \u201cWhoa, I can&#8217;t believe this is happening right now\u201d and other times when I\u2019m kinda numb. It just depends on the day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ever say, \u201cWhat the fuck did I get myself Into?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>EC:<\/strong> Yeah.<\/p>\n<p><strong>KD:<\/strong> Definitely, for sure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BD:<\/strong> Nah. I love it. It\u2019s weird not having cameras on me.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Growing-Up-Hip-Hop-S-2-Premiere-Egypt-Criss.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-90588\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 264 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Growing-Up-Hip-Hop-S-2-Premiere-Egypt-Criss-264x300.jpg\" alt=\"growing-up-hip-hop-s-2-premiere-egypt-criss\" width=\"264\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>RM:<\/strong> Y\u2019all got to get booked on that show Big Brother, that\u2019s the one where they got cameras on 24\/7.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BD:<\/strong> I\u2019m not trying to drive myself into the sand. I\u2019d rather have my freedom and my cellphone. I\u2019m trying to bring out some weird characters. I\u2019m good on that, I like reality television this way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>KD:<\/strong> It is really nice. From last season when I first started \u2014 since I\u2019m new at this \u2014 when cameras were on me I didn\u2019t show I was nervous, but it\u2019s like trying to catch a ghost. When you have cameras on trying to spot something, they don\u2019t come out, they come when you least expect it. So for me it was hard to open up and unleash, nothing bad, but the real power.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BD:<\/strong> Go \u201cbeast mode.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>EC:<\/strong> I had to just learn to open up and become more expressive of my feelings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Growing-Up-Hip-Hop-S-2-Premiere-Kristinia-DeBarge-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-90592\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 212 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Growing-Up-Hip-Hop-S-2-Premiere-Kristinia-DeBarge-2-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"growing-up-hip-hop-s-2-premiere-kristinia-debarge-2\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sounds like even though you\u2019re familiar with it, it has changed you in some way.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>KD:<\/strong> I think I\u2019ve just become more cautious. I have, not a guard up, but I\u2019m very aware of my surroundings. I\u2019m definitely\u2026. I want to say this as positively as I can\u2026 I\u2019m just more cautious and not as trustworthy as I was Egypt\u2019s age, I was a lot more trusting back then and thinking everyone was my friend.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t think of my castmates as [just] friends, they\u2019re like family to me. Just being out in the real world you just never know who\u2019s your friend and who\u2019s not or if they\u2019re just trying to get information because they are actually interested in you and want to help you, or because they just want to talk about you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Isn\u2019t that always the case? You\u2019ve created a family experience out of this. Have you been able to impart that to your parents?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Growing-Up-Hip-Hop-S-2-Premiere-Egypt-Criss-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-90589\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 216 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Growing-Up-Hip-Hop-S-2-Premiere-Egypt-Criss-2-216x300.jpg\" alt=\"growing-up-hip-hop-s-2-premiere-egypt-criss-2\" width=\"216\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>EC:<\/strong> With my mom sometimes I feel like we switch roles, I\u2019m the mom and she\u2019s the daughter. She&#8217;ll be bugging out about something and I say, \u201cMom, take a deep breath, you got this, God has you.\u201d We help each other.<\/p>\n<p><strong>KD:<\/strong> That\u2019s the beauty of having children and allowing them to be who they are. Not trying to shape them, just allow them to be who they are. I think we surprise our family sometimes and it\u2019s refreshing for them to have us teach them a cool lesson.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RM:<\/strong> It\u2019s a different generation, with us coming into this industry, having that platform already, having that blueprint. We\u2019re a little more advanced in knowing what not to do. It\u2019s like Egypt\u2019s mom says, she says she wished she knew this and I think that\u2019s the cool thing about growing up hip hop, we got to grow with it, we got to see what not to do.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s up to us whether we want to make the same mistakes or take it up a notch. That\u2019s the beauty of this show. This show isn\u2019t about cat fights or being negative, it\u2019s about being a family. The thing about being a family though is you don\u2019t always have to agree. Family actually fight more than friends because you\u2019re not afraid to tell them the truth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Growing-Up-Hip-Hop-S-2-Premiere-Boogie-Dash-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-90598\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 245 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Growing-Up-Hip-Hop-S-2-Premiere-Boogie-Dash-2-245x300.jpg\" alt=\"growing-up-hip-hop-s-2-premiere-boogie-dash-2\" width=\"245\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>BD:<\/strong> And you\u2019re with them more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RM:<\/strong> That\u2019s the cool thing about me and my pops. Our relationship is like we\u2019re business partners. Even when I was a kid he\u2019d make sacrifices for me and I\u2019d make sacrifices for him. I remember when I did my show on Nickelodeon, The Romeo Show, I was like \u201cpops, I want you to be the other star on this show, but Nickelodeon wants you to take out your gold teeth!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You got to look at the big picture, Pops, you could be the next Denzel after this. He took out his gold teeth he was known for for four years and starred in my show. We always had that back and forth since I was a little kid.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BD:<\/strong> I\u2019m the same way as Rome. My dad and me, I remember one day I told him to get rid of [something] and the next day it was gone because it wasn\u2019t that hot anymore, I was getting tired of it, and I was like 12. My dad is smart. He listens to kids no matter what because the kids know what\u2019s cool and as you get older you get less cool [laughs].<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Growing-Up-Hip-Hop-S-2-Premiere-Romeo-Miller-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-90595\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 224 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Growing-Up-Hip-Hop-S-2-Premiere-Romeo-Miller-2-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"growing-up-hip-hop-s-2-premiere-romeo-miller-2\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>RM:<\/strong> Not in his case, man!<\/p>\n<p><strong>BD:<\/strong> You must have some good kids then!<\/p>\n<p><strong>With my daughter I go back and forth and she worries about me and calls. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>KD:<\/strong> They want to make sure you\u2019re going to the doctor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Or she wants to talk about a bad boyfriend and I be an anchor. This is a pretty political season. You put a camera on Trump and he doesn\u2019t shut up. How does having a camera on you change how you look and speak or how you act or speak to a crowd?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>RM:<\/strong> This season I feel like we opened up more. It\u2019s like in a relationship, the longer you know somebody the longer you\u2019re in it\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>You feel more comfortable.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Growing-Up-Hip-Hop-S-2-Premiere-Romeo-Miller-and-Kristinia-DeBarge.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-90596\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 215 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Growing-Up-Hip-Hop-S-2-Premiere-Romeo-Miller-and-Kristinia-DeBarge-215x300.jpg\" alt=\"growing-up-hip-hop-s-2-premiere-romeo-miller-and-kristinia-debarge\" width=\"215\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>RM: <\/strong>Yeah, you\u2019re more comfortable. The camera was like a piece of our family so there are a lot of awkward moments because we\u2019re out living life right in front of the camera. That\u2019s why this season is pretty juicy; it\u2019s fun TV. There\u2019s a lot of real life moments in there because I just forgot about the camera sometimes. I\u2019m excited to see this season myself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BD:<\/strong> This year we had a great production team. Why have I been so comfortable with this production team? Because I actually still talk to them to this day. I still play ball with them or just hit them up to hang out. They\u2019re the main reason why I\u2019m more comfortable now because everyone here is my friend. It\u2019s not like I\u2019m just working with random people. Last season they were a different group.<\/p>\n<p><strong>KD:<\/strong> They made you feel like they cared about you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BD:<\/strong> OG, and Julio, and Jaffe and all those guys. Mark was cool too. They just treated you like they were your friend and not \u201cI\u2019m just here for business, you need to do this and that.\u201d Nah, be you so we can get the best TV possible.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Growing-Up-Hip-Hop-S-2-Premiere-Egypt-Criss-and-Kristinia-DeBarge.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-90590\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 228 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Growing-Up-Hip-Hop-S-2-Premiere-Egypt-Criss-and-Kristinia-DeBarge-228x300.jpg\" alt=\"growing-up-hip-hop-s-2-premiere-egypt-criss-and-kristinia-debarge\" width=\"228\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>KD:<\/strong> And they respected when we said no.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EC: <\/strong>With me I love making music but I want to be an actress one day and it\u2019s definitely helpful with cameras around. It\u2019s reality, but what I want to do would be scripted, so it\u2019d help me get in tune with my character even if my character is myself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It is different when you look at yourself through the eyes of other people especially when you\u2019re on camera.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>RM:<\/strong> I hate looking at myself, not gonna lie.<\/p>\n<p><strong>KD:<\/strong> When I have other people looking at myself with me, then I get like, \u201cOh my god, you guys are looking at me\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are there things you\u2019ve learned this season that you could use to advise the politicians? There\u2019s now the Museum of African American Culture in Washington, DC \u2014 imagine you might end up in there. I was just in DC for the Black Caucus event and Black Money Matters. They want me to run for something. They want me to become an intern and learn political things and all this other stuff.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s funny because I\u2019m there in ripped jeans, but they still want me to run because they believe I have a powerful voice and I believe I do too. With social media you can say something that may be correct, but it isn\u2019t correct in somebody else\u2019s mind, so you\u2019re always going to be arguing. I\u2019m not the kind of person where I want to be arguing back and forth. I just want to give my point of view then go with it.<\/p>\n<p>After watching the debate I wish I could have told those two up there to just be honest. We got a lot of discrimination in the world with blacks and whites and it\u2019s obvious, look. We got a black President, that\u2019s cool. But even a black President isn&#8217;t enough to run it so there\u2019s a lot of questions for the black community. It gets a little awkward when those are asked because they\u2019re trying so hard to please that black community so well. You\u2019ve got to be truthful.<\/p>\n<p>I saw Donald Trump get asked a question about him being racist towards letting African Americans live in his places back in the day and he got sued over that. I think we\u2019re all a little bit racist in a way because guess what, we don\u2019t understand each other.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Growing-Up-Hip-Hop-S-2-Premiere-Kristinia-DeBarge-Boogie-Dash-Egypt-Criss-and-Romeo-Miller.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-90593\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 298'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Growing-Up-Hip-Hop-S-2-Premiere-Kristinia-DeBarge-Boogie-Dash-Egypt-Criss-and-Romeo-Miller-300x298.jpg\" alt=\"growing-up-hip-hop-s-2-premiere-kristinia-debarge-boogie-dash-egypt-criss-and-romeo-miller\" width=\"300\" height=\"298\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If these people were more honest, if he stood up and was like, \u201cMaybe I was like that back in the day.\u201d But he\u2019s privileged, white, and a billionaire, that\u2019s life. He doesn\u2019t understand me, I don\u2019t understand him, that\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>Even with Hillary, if you&#8217;re open and honest you&#8217;d be surprised who you can touch. My advice would be to just be honest. That can take you even further than what you think. Another thing on that topic, we don\u2019t all have to understand each other. The common goal should be living in peace, that\u2019s it.<\/p>\n<p>Everybody\u2019s not going to understand Romeo, I\u2019m not gonna understand Peter from Mississippi, I\u2019m not gonna understand Jason from Compton, or whoever from Japan, France, we\u2019re all different and that\u2019s the beauty of life and that\u2019s what we have to learn as a country if we want to truly be great again. I watch a little of the politics going on and I watched the last debate with Hillary and Trump and I gotta say it\u2019s quite funny. It\u2019s pretty funny seeing two adults bicker and fight. Sometimes I think,\u201dWhat example are we setting for the next generation?\u201d I try not to get too caught up in it, but I did vote this year, I voted for Obama when I was 18 and I\u2019m excited for Hillary to become President.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EC:<\/strong> I definitely agree with what Romeo was saying.
