VH1 has released some new photos for \u201cThe Breaks,\u201d<\/strong> the network\u2019s new scripted series based on its critically acclaimed hit film that aired earlier this year.\u00a0\u201cThe Breaks\u201d will premiere on Monday, February 20th at 9PM ET\/PT.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Melonie Diaz<\/strong>, Sinqua Walls<\/strong>\u00a0and Ali Ahn<\/strong>\u00a0are joining those coming back from the movie\u2019s original cast, including\u00a0Afton Willamson<\/strong>, Wood Harris<\/strong>, Mack Wilds<\/strong>, Antoine Harris<\/strong>, David Call<\/strong>\u00a0and Evan Handler<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Also added to the cast are\u00a0Gloria Reuben<\/strong>, who will portray Malthuas \u201cMattie\u201d Taylor, a powerful and polished department head at a major record company; and\u00a0rapper, actor Tip \u201cT.I.\u201d Harris<\/strong>, who will play\u00a0Paul Anders, a powerful lawyer who comes to Barry Fouray\u2019s (Wood Harris) defense after a public scandal.<\/p>\n

Guest stars will include Kim Wayans<\/strong>\u00a0as Ella, Imani X\u2019s (Teyana Taylor) mother or more accurately \u2013 her \u201cMomager.\u201d\u00a0Lela Rochon<\/strong> plays Marie Jones, Nikki\u2019s (Afton Williamson) mother who -like Nikki \u2013 is not always forthcoming with the truth, but for very different reasons than her daughter. Dave East<\/strong> plays Hashim, a rapper who performs with Imani X.\u00a0Hassan Johnson<\/strong> plays Det. Anthony Purdell, a detective investigating Ahm (Antoine Harris) and his gang affiliations.<\/p>\n

Returning to reprise their roles from the film are\u00a0Cliff \u2018Method Man\u2019 Smith<\/strong> as\u00a0Darryl Van Putten, Sr. DeeVee\u2019s (Mack Wilds) perennially irritated, judgmental father.\u00a0William Jackson Harper<\/strong> plays Stephen Jenkins, Barry\u2019s put-upon right hand at Fouray Management.\u00a0Russell Hornsby<\/strong> plays Sampson King, the smooth-talking radio host at WPPS who hates rap music.\u00a0J. Bernard Calloway<\/strong> plays Gordie Charlon, the road manager for Fouray Management and one of Barry\u2019s (Wood Harris) oldest friends. \u00a0A-F-R-O<\/strong> plays D-Rome, a star artist on Fouray\u2019s roster who has greatness in him; and\u00a0De\u2019Adre Aziza<\/strong> plays Tamika Grant, the receptionist at Fouray Management who suspects Nikki\u2019s motives<\/p>\n

Mann, Charnas, Strauss, Bill Flanagan<\/strong> and Darren Goldberg<\/strong> are executive producers on \u201cThe Breaks.\u201d Maggie Malina, Chris McCarthy<\/strong> and Amy Doyle<\/strong>\u00a0will serve as executive producers for VH1.<\/p>\n

Inspired by the book by journalist Dan Charnas<\/strong> entitled The Big Payback, a narrative history of the hip-hop business, \u201cThe Breaks\u201d is written, directed and executive produced by Seith Mann<\/strong> (\u201cThe Wire,\u201d \u201cThe Walking Dead,\u201d \u201cHomeland\u201d) with a story by Mann and Charnas. John J. Strauss<\/strong> (\u201cMozart in the Jungle\u201d) is joining as Executive Producer for the series. The film followed three young friends fulfilling their hip hop dreams in New York City in 1990.<\/p>\n

In the film that aired in January 2016, \u201cThe Breaks\u201d chronicled the journey of Nikki (Afton Williamson<\/strong>), David (David Call<\/strong>) and DeeVee (Mack Wilds<\/strong>), three friends united by their love of hip-hop, as they work to make their big mark in the music industry. The film traveled viewers back to the summer of 1990 in New York City where the music industry\u2019s artists and hustlers intersected in the dance clubs and the street corners of the still crime-ridden city. Nikki Jones is a brilliant recent grad who abandoned a scholarship to law school to pursue her dream of becoming a record exec. Her boyfriend, David Aaron (Call), is the scrappy son of a legendary music producer (Evan Handler<\/strong>) who is unwilling to rest on his father\u2019s laurels and notorious reputation. DeeVee is an aspiring producer on the hunt to find the next big rapper on the come-up.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/a><\/p>\n

Nikki fast talked her way into an internship at the premier hip-hop company, Fouray Entertainment and caught\u00a0the eye of the label\u2019s infamous founder, Barry Fouray (Wood Harris<\/strong>) while David struggled at the city\u2019s top R&B radio station whose celebrity DJ refused to program real hip-hop. Meanwhile, DeeVee returned to his roots in the Fort Greene projects to scout for talent and ran into Ahm (Antoine Harris), a drug dealer with a lyrical gift whose talent brought\u00a0them all to the next level. But they will soon discover lives can be broken as fast as legends can be born.<\/p>\n

The series will continue to explore their triumph and heartbreak trying to make their mark in a new and complex hip hop culture.<\/strong><\/p>\n
