\"\"<\/a>Earlier today actress Ruth Negga<\/strong> was among the Academy Award nominees for Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role. She was\u00a0nominated for her role in the\u00a0race drama film “Loving,”<\/strong> written & directed by Jeff Nichols,<\/strong> and starring\u00a0herself<\/b>\u00a0and Joel Edgerton<\/strong> as Mildred and Richard Loving<\/strong>, the couple behind the seminal 1967 civil rights case Loving vs. Virginia.<\/p>\n

The film, which premiered at the 2016 Cannes International Film Festival, co-stars Michael Shannon, Nick Kroll, Marton Csokas, Alano Miller, Terri Abney, Christopher Mann, Will Dalton, Chris R. Greene, Winter-Lee Holland, Jon Bass<\/strong>, and Bill Camp<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Here’s what Negga commented on her nomination:

Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple, were married in June 1958. As a result, authorities broke into their home, arrested them, and they were sentenced to a year in the state penitentiary. This sentence was suspended on the condition that they be exiled from the state of Virginia. Unbowed, the couple spent the next nine years fighting to get home, together.<\/p>\n
