Lee and his Blackmaled Productions<\/strong>. Lee most recently directed and produced Universal Pictures\u2019 highly-anticipated comedy <strong>Girls Trip<\/strong>, which will be released in North America on July 21. They have respected and been supportive of my vision as a filmmaker, and I hope to continue the great success that I\u2019ve had at Universal as we continue this fruitful partnership.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With family roots embedded in the arts, entertainment and education, Lee has been making films since the age of 12, and has been working professionally in the entertainment industry since age 17 as a production assistant, apprentice film editor, casting associate and director\u2019s assistant to his cousin, legendary filmmaker Spike Lee.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Malcolm-D.-Lee-Nia-Long-Sanaa-Lathan-and-Morris-Chestnut-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-41116\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 199'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Malcolm-D.-Lee-Nia-Long-Sanaa-Lathan-and-Morris-Chestnut-1-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lee has directed five of his nine films to date with Universal beginning with his directorial debut, the critically acclaimed audience favorite <strong>The Best Man<\/strong>, which debuted in October of 1999, and scored a No. 1 ranking at the box office. The film\u2019s ensemble cast starred <strong>Morris Chestnut, Nia Long, Regina Hall, Harold Perrineau, Terrence Howard, Taye Diggs, Sanaa Lathan<\/strong> and <strong>Monica Calhoun<\/strong>. He went on to direct the action-comedy <strong>Undercover Brother<\/strong>, which starred <strong>Eddie Griffin, Dave Chappelle<\/strong> and <strong>Neil Patrick Harris<\/strong> in May 2002 and again earned stellar reviews. Jackson<\/strong> and the late <strong>Bernie Mac<\/strong>. Both films opened in 2008. However it was the sequel to his first film where Lee scored his biggest box-office hit. In November of 2013, with the original cast reunited, <strong>The Best Man Holiday,<\/strong> grossed $30.5 million in its opening weekend alone, pleasing audiences and shocking the industry with a game-changing debut.
