Honey<\/strong>\u2019s 2007 book (&#8220;<strong>Going Down Jericho Road<\/strong>&#8220;) about the 1968 Memphis sanitation workers strike that became a turning point in the U.S. civil rights movement.<\/p>\n<p>The strike, carried out by black employees over poor working conditions and discrimination, drew Martin Luther King Jr, the National Guard and the national media for what was a 65-day, often violent labor action. It also was the reason King was in Memphis that April 4; the civil rights icon was there to support the workers\u2019 efforts to unionize when he was assassinated on the balcony of the city\u2019s Lorraine Motel. The strike ended 12 days later.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Going-Down-Jericho-Road.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-103133\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 201 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Going-Down-Jericho-Road-201x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sycamore\u2019s <strong>Ben Nearn<\/strong> and <strong>Tom Rice<\/strong> are producing the film and it&#8217;s the latest addition to a development slate of films focused on stories that address social justice, redemption, reconciliation and the human condition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe feel this film is culturally relevant and vitally important in today\u2019s climate,\u201d <\/strong>said Nearn and Rice. <strong>\u201cI Am a Man exposes the long history of racial inequality, paternalism, and economic injustice in this country, that unfortunately continues today.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Said Fletcher: <strong>\u201cIn my opinion, some of the best stories combine well-known history with the unknown history surrounding it. This is one of those stories. It is an honor to work on a project of such significance. He is the first African American to receive an Academy Award for writing. He made his directorial debut with <strong>Violet &amp; Daisy<\/strong>, which was one of The Sopranos&#8217; <strong>James Gandolfin<\/strong>i&#8217;s last acting roles before his death.
