Working with people like Ava and Oprah, I have to say that it’s becoming a standard for me. I love that it’s exciting and amazing to the world as it should be. I feel a lot of ways about the “1st” thing because it’s the first because it’s the first, if that makes any sense. I think as long as we get the opportunity to tell these stories, we’ll see a lot more films cross the $100M mark produced by, directed by, written by and starring Black women and Black Men and everything. I was very much still an unknown and got called in for an audition. I got called that I got the job on Girls Trip on the last day of filming Queen Sugar. I started two weeks later. It just happened to work out. I was already in Louisiana and the role was great. I went into the audition and gave them everything.
