Featuring pioneering filmmaking techniques, the film welcomes back to the big screen iconic characters that audiences have long treasured\u2014but in a whole new way. From Disney Live Action, \u201cThe Lion King\u201d is slated for U.S. theaters on July 19, 2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIt is a director&#8217;s dream to assemble a talented team like this to bring this classic story to life,\u201d<\/strong> said Favreau.<\/p>\n<p>Lions rule the African savanna in \u201cThe Lion King,\u201d which welcomes <strong>Donald Glover<\/strong> (\u201cAtlanta,\u201d \u201cSolo: A Star Wars Story\u201d) as future king Simba, <strong>Beyonc\u00e9 Knowles-Carter<\/strong> (\u201cDreamgirls,\u201d \u201cLemonade\u201d visual album) as Simba\u2019s friend-turned-love interest Nala, and <strong>James Earl Jones<\/strong> (\u201cRogue One: A Star Wars Story,\u201d \u201cField of Dreams\u201d) as Simba\u2019s wise and loving father, Mufasa, reprising his iconic performance from Disney\u2019s 1994 animated classic. <strong>Chiwetel Ejiofor<\/strong> (\u201cTwelve Years a Slave,\u201d Marvel Studios\u2019 \u201cDoctor Strange\u201d) was called on to portray Simba\u2019s villainous uncle Scar, and <strong>Alfre Woodard<\/strong> (\u201cJuanita,\u201d Marvel\u2019s \u201cLuke Cage\u201d) portrays Simba\u2019s no-nonsense mother, Sarabi. <strong>JD McCrary<\/strong> (OWN\u2019s \u201cTyler Perry\u2019s The Paynes,\u201d Apple\u2019s \u201cVital Signs\u201d) fills the shoes of Young Simba, a confident cub who can\u2019t wait to be king, and <strong>Shahadi Wright Joseph<\/strong> (NBC\u2019s \u201cHairspray Live,\u201d Broadway\u2019s \u201cThe Lion King\u201d) brings tough cub Young Nala to life.<\/p>\n<p>Every kingdom comes with a trustworthy advisor or two. <strong>John Kani<\/strong> (\u201cCoriolanus,\u201d Marvel Studios\u2019 \u201cCaptain America: Civil War\u201d) was cast as the wise baboon Rafiki, and <strong>John Oliver<\/strong> (HBO\u2019s \u201cLast Week Tonight with John Oliver,\u201d Comedy Central\u2019s \u201cThe Daily Show with Jon Stewart\u201d) was tapped as hornbill Zazu, Mufasa\u2019s loyal confidant. When Simba goes into exile, he relies on two newfound friends\u2014<strong>Seth Rogen<\/strong> (\u201cSausage Party,\u201d \u201cNeighbors\u201d) lends his comedic chops to na\u00efve warthog Pumbaa, and <strong>Billy Eichner<\/strong> (\u201cBilly on the Street,\u201d FX\u2019s \u201cAmerican Horror Story\u201d) joins the cast as know-it-all meerkat Timon.<\/p>\n<p>While most of the animals in the kingdom respect the king, the hyenas have other plans. <strong>Florence Kasumba<\/strong> (NBC\u2019s \u201cEmerald City,\u201d Marvel Studios\u2019 \u201cBlack Panther\u201d) portrays Shenzi, <strong>Eric Andr\u00e9<\/strong> (Adult Swim\u2019s \u201cThe Eric Andr\u00e9 Show,\u201d FXX\u2019s \u201cMan Seeking Woman\u201d) is Azizi, and <strong>Keegan-Michael Key<\/strong> (\u201cPredator,\u201d Netflix\u2019s \u201cFriends from College\u201d) plays Kamari.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Lion King\u201d is directed by Favreau (\u201cThe Jungle Book,\u201d Marvel Studios\u2019 \u201cIron Man\u201d) and produced by Favreau, Jeffrey Silver (\u201cBeauty and the Beast,\u201d \u201cEdge of Tomorrow\u201d) and Karen Gilchrist (\u201cThe Jungle Book,\u201d \u201cChef\u201d). Jeff Nathanson (\u201cCatch Me If You Can,\u201d \u201cPirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales\u201d) penned the screenplay based on the 1994 screenplay by Irene Mecchi, Jonathan Roberts and Linda Woolverton. Tom Peitzman (co-producer \u201cKong: Skull Island,\u201d \u201cAlice in Wonderland\u201d) and Thomas Schumacher (\u201cThe Lion King,\u201d \u201cBeauty and the Beast\u201d) are executive producers, and John Bartnicki (\u201cThe Jungle Book,\u201d \u201cChef\u201d) is co-producer. The award-winning team of artists tapped to bring the African savanna and its animal inhabitants to life include visual effects supervisor Rob Legato, who conceived the virtual production on \u201cAvatar,\u201d won Academy Awards\u00ae for his work on \u201cThe Jungle Book,\u201d \u201cHugo\u201d and \u201cTitanic,\u201d and was nominated for an Oscar\u00ae for his work on \u201cApollo 13.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The film\u2019s animation supervisor is Oscar\u00ae-winner Andrew R.
