Variety<\/a> is reporting that MGM and Warner Bros. have hired Steven Caple Jr<\/strong>. to direct direct \u201cCreed 2,\u201d with Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone<\/strong> and Tessa Thompson<\/strong> all returning.<\/p>\n

According to the site, Stallone had considered directing \u201cCreed 2\u201d at one point, but after talking it over with Jordan and the execs, they made the decision to find another director. After a lengthy search, Jordan and Stallone personally picked Caple to take the reins.<\/p>\n

Ryan Coogler, who directed \u201cCreed,\u201d is expected to join in an executive producer role.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Caple will direct from an original screenplay written by Stallone and Cheo Hodari Coker<\/strong> (showrunner of \u201cLuke Cage\u201d) based on characters from the Rocky franchise. The film is being produced by Irwin Winkler, Charles Winkler, William Chartoff, David Winkler<\/strong>, and Kevin King-Templeton<\/strong>. Jordan and Guy Riedel will executive produce.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe could not be more fortunate and excited for the collaboration of Steven, Sly, Michael and the producers, to build upon the success of \u2018Creed,’\u201d<\/strong> said Jonathan Glickman, MGM\u2019s president, motion picture group. \u201cThe combination of Steven\u2019s talent and unique vision makes him the perfect director to continue the Rocky franchise\u2019s storied lineage.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The upcoming installment follows Adonis Creed (Jordan)\u2019s life inside and outside of the ring as he deals with new-found fame, issues with his family, and his continuing quest to become a champion.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an honor to be a part of such an iconic franchise and to work with such great collaborators,\u201d<\/strong> Caple said. \u201cMike, Sly, and Tessa are extraordinarily talented and bring something special to today\u2019s culture. I look forward to joining the family and continuing the precedent set by this franchise\u2019s alumni of incredible filmmakers.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Production is set to begin in Philadelphia in March.<\/p>\n

Caple\u2019s first feature was the IFC pic \u201cThe Land,\u201d a coming-of-age tale that he directed right out of USC. It premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and tells the story of four teenage boys who devote their summer to escaping the streets of Cleveland to pursue a dream life of professional skateboarding.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe character of Adonis Creed reflects this generation and its challenges,\u201d<\/strong> Stallone said. \u201cI believe it\u2019s important for the director to also be a part of this generation like I was in mine, to make the story as relatable as possible. We are extremely lucky to have the talented young filmmaker Steven Caple Jr. step up and accept the role of director. I am confident that he and Michael B. Jordan<\/a> will hit it out of the park!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Interesting enough, BOTH Coogler and Caple Jr. are winners of the AFBB HBO\u00ae Short Film Competition. Caple Jr. won it in 2013 for his short A Different Tree while Cooler won the award for\u00a0for his film, Fig.<\/p>\n

MGM recently announced that it was back in the theatrical distribution game and will handle domestic distribution rights for \u201cCreed 2,\u201d with WB handling international.<\/p>\n

The movie is dated for Nov. 21, 2018. The most recent \u201cCreed\u201d completely revamped the Rocky series, not only grossing $110 million at the domestic box office, but also earning Stallone an Oscar nomination for his performance.<\/p>\n

While plot details about the sequel are still vague, Stallone had hinted that the story would revolve around the Ivan Drago character who infamously killed Creed\u2019s father Apollo in \u201cRocky IV.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
