The announcement was made today by <strong>Mike Sargent,<\/strong> co-president, BFCC. Votes were cast and tabulated in NY at the organization\u2019s annual meeting on December 15, 2017.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Mudbound-Poster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-101205\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 225 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Mudbound-Poster-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Recognizing achievements in theatrical motion pictures, the BFCC awarded prizes in 13 categories including best picture, best director, original and adapted screenplay, best actor, best actress, best supporting actor, best supporting actress, best animated feature, best independent film, best documentary feature, best foreign film and best ensemble. Special Signature awards are also given to industry pioneers and rising stars.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThis is been an enormous year for storytellers of color\u201d<\/strong> says Sargent. <strong>\u201cFor the first time we are seeing a large diversity of films that are not just starring actors, not just being written by, and not just being directed or produce by but written, directed, produced and starring African-Americans, shattering barriers and ushering in a true era of black film.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Black-Female-Directors.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-105224\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Black-Female-Directors-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever before have had we more African-American directors (<strong>Jordan Peele, F. Gary Gray, Malcolm Lee<\/strong>) with films grossing over $100M each in the same year. Peele has not only defied box office expectations but helped redefine a genre that very few African American filmmakers ever get to work in. This powerful storyteller has reminded the world that while horror films remains a lucrative entertainment genre there is much room for deeper meaning and social commentary within the context of the \u201cscary movie\u201d, the very essence of the word Pioneer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rising Star \u2013 Daniel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Daniel-Kaluuya-pic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-105223\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 297 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Daniel-Kaluuya-pic-297x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"297\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Daniel Kaluuya\u2019s performance in \u2018Get Out\u2019 defines exactly what a rising star is, coming from seemingly nowhere his performance help cement get out as the horror film classic that it is. Besides being the year\u2019s biggest R-rated comedy and runaway hit with audiences and critics alike, \u201cGirls Trip\u201d became the first film to be produced (Will Packer, Malcolm D. Lee), directed (Malcolm D. Lee), written (Kenya Barris and Tracy Oliver) and starring (Queen Latifah, Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Tiffany Haddish) African Americans to make $100 million at the box office.<\/p>\n<p>When you throw in Hidden Figures in the mix, because it went wide on January 7th of this year and ended with an $169M domestic gross, films led by an African American female cast has a big draw that hasn\u2019t been tapped into with the great deal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BLACK FILM CRITICS CIRCLE TOP TEN FILMS OF 2017<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>1. Blade Runner 2049<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Founded in 2010, the Black Film Critics Circle is a membership organization comprised of film critics of color from daily newspapers, weekly newspapers, magazines, radio, television and qualifying on-line publications. The organization is dedicated to honoring excellence of professionals in the theatrical motion picture industry in U.S. and World Cinema. Its mission is to celebrate contributions and achievements in film by people of the black Diaspora who work in front of and behind the camera, maintain the integrity of a true Critics organization and advance a collective vision of journalists of the black Diaspora. BFCC assists in the development of new talent in the field of entertainment journalism through educational opportunities, mentoring and strategic partnerships and raises awareness of the significance of black film and black film history as a critical part of film culture and preservation. The organization meets annually in December to vote on the year\u2019s films.
