Oscar nominations for the 90th annual awards were announced on Tuesday morning from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, Calif.<\/p>\n

Academy President John Bailey was joined by Tiffany Haddish<\/strong> and Andy Serkis<\/strong>\u00a0to reveal the nominees in 24 categories.<\/p>\n

Guillermo del Toro\u2019s \u201cThe Shape of Water\u201d continued its awards show streak, leading the pack with 13 nominations. Christopher Nolan\u2019s \u201cDunkirk,\u201d\u00a0Martin McDonagh\u2019s \u201cThree Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,\u201d Greta Gerwig\u2019s \u201cLady Bird,\u201d Luca Guadagnino\u2019s \u201cCall Me by Your Name,\u201d and Steven Spielberg\u2019s \u201cThe Post\u201d also scored nominations.<\/p>\n

All told, 13 Black folks landed nominations, which is five short from last year’s historic number. With diversity issues always being talked about when it comes to awards, suffice to say, the message is getting across where films and talent are being seen and marketed rightly\u00a0to be in the playing field.<\/p>\n

At 28, Daniel is youngest Black male to be Oscar nominated for Best Actor.<\/p>\n

Dee Rees (Mudbound) is the 1st Black female to be Oscar nominated for Adapted Screenplay and joins Suzanne de Passe (Lady Sings the Blues) as the only African-American females nominated for screen-writing<\/p>\n

Jordan Peele is the 1st African American to be Oscar nominated 3x in one year (picture, director, original screenplay).<\/p>\n

Jordan Peele is the 5th African-American to be nominated for Best Director, Joining John Singleton, Lee Daniels, Steve McQueen and Barry Jenkins<\/p>\n

Jordan Peele is the 4th African-American nominee for Best Writing (Original Screenplay), Joining Suzanne de Passe, Spike Lee, and John Singleton<\/p>\n

Mary J. Blige is the sixth African American female recording artist to be Oscar nominated for acting, joining Ethel Waters, Dorothy Dandridge, Diana Ross, Queen Latifah and Jennifer Hudson<\/p>\n

Kevin Wilson, Jr. is the 3rd African-American to be nominated for Short Film (Live Action), joining David Massey (1991) and Dianne Houston (1995)<\/p>\n

With her nomination for The Shape of Water, Octavia Spencer has tied Viola Davis with the most nominations for a black actress (3). Each has won one for Best Supporting Actress.<\/p>\n

For Denzel Washington (Fences\/ Roman J. Israel, Esq.) and Octavia Spence\u00a0(Hidden Figures\/ The Shape of Water), it marks the 1st time 2 African Americans have gone back-to-back years with Oscar noms\u00a0for Acting.<\/p>\n

The Academy Awards \u2014 hosted by Jimmy Kimmel for the second time \u2014 will air live on ABC on March 4.<\/p>\n
