He will headline the \u201cABFF Talk Series\u201d on Saturday, June 16 in Miami, Florida.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cA Conversation with Ryan Coogler,\u201d<\/strong> will spotlight Coogler\u2019s journey to success, how he catapulted from a breakout indie talent to an A-list director, and the path he took to become one of the most respected and sought-after filmmakers in Hollywood. The interview will also highlight his connection to the ABFF from the beginning of his career.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/ABFF-2018-pic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-103753\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 228 300'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/ABFF-2018-pic-228x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"228\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Founded by film and television producer Jeff Friday, the ABFF has provided a platform for emerging black artists for more than two decades. It has premiered the early works and supported the careers of many of today\u2019s most successful actors, producers, writers, directors and stand-up comedians &#8211; including <strong>Anthony Anderson<\/strong> (Black-ish), <strong>Will Packer<\/strong> (Girls Trip), <strong>Issa Rae<\/strong> (Insecure), <strong>Omari Hardwick<\/strong> (Power) and <strong>Raoul Peck<\/strong> (I Am Not Your Negro). Through its TalentWorks initiative, the festival sustains talent pipeline programs supported by entertainment companies (HBO, Turner, ComcastNBCU) that have significantly expanded the reach of the diverse talent working in Hollywood today.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/ABFF-Honors-Ceremony-3-Ryan-Coogler.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-medium wp-image-10296\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 225'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/ABFF-Honors-Ceremony-3-Ryan-Coogler-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 2011, Coogler was a beneficiary of one of these programs and won the HBO Short Film Award for his film <strong>FIG<\/strong>, along with a $20,000 cash prize.<\/p>\n<p>Following ABFF, Coogler continued his career and directed his first feature-length film, <strong>Fruitvale Station<\/strong>, which earned rave reviews. In 2015, he directed the mega-hit <strong>Creed<\/strong>, a spin-off of the Rocky films, starring <strong>Michael B. Jordan<\/strong> and <strong>Sylvester Stallone<\/strong>. Most recently, Coogler signed on to executive produce Creed 2 and tapped another ABFF alum, <strong>Steven Caple, Jr.<\/strong>, to direct.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Ryan-Coogler-ABFF-BET-2016.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-109365\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 300 216'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blackfilm.com\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Ryan-Coogler-ABFF-BET-2016-300x216.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"216\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 2016, Coogler was recognized for his accomplishments and was presented with the \u201cRising Star\u201d award at the 2016 ABFF Honors, an awards show extension of the American Black Film Festival that salutes the outstanding achievement in film and television of individuals, as well as recognizing those who champion diversity and inclusion. ABFF Honors aired on BET Networks.<\/p>\n<p>While filming Creed, Coogler received the call to direct Black Panther and has delivered Marvel and Disney the most outstanding Hollywood achievement of the 21st century to date &#8211; a black superhero story with an almost all-black cast. Black Panther recently surpassed Titanic on the all-time list of highest-grossing films to become the third-biggest earner in unadjusted profits.
